weird popping noise

I was on the highway today driving around 60-75mph in 5th gear. I then downshifted to 4th and was holding boost at around 20psi when I feel this
bucking, then drop in boost. I thought it was my hose that popped off my intake manifold again, but I didn't completely lose power and cautiously drove to nearest exit to check out what might have happened.

I looked under the hood and check the pipes and hoses and made sure they weren't loose. Everything seemed fine. I got back on the highway and drove carefully for a while and then noticed that the Check Engine Soon light came on.

I drove home fine and made sure there were no boost leaking.

The problem is, when I started driving locally I started to hear this popping noise from the front side of the car. First I thought it was almost like an engine knock sound. Then it started to sound like suspension in the front popping when I went over bumps.

Anyone have this problem before or know what this could be? Thanks

Search for the P0300 misfire code and see if your problems might relate to this..

I also noticed my rear bumper near the exhaust had significantly more yellow/brown residue than I've ever seen in the past. Almost as if it was burnt, but not necessarily. Maybe too lean? Should I just take it to Mistubishi? Why would this happen all of a sudden?

well it definetly sounds like misfire now. I hear it either right underneath the drivers seat where my downpipe and testpipe are located, or it's in the engine.

will taking it to mistubishi help? what causes this? so random

Yes, Mitsubishi has a fix for this..They will reflash your ECU with the corrected data; take it to them and let them know you have the P0300 misfire code from time to time and wish to get the reflash.

Umm... before you just assume your problem is the P0300 Random/Multiple Misfire, why don't you get your CEL code pulled? 99% of the time, people on this forum are VERY quick to say every problem is related to P0300. Get the code pulled and tell us what it is, then go from there...

ok, should I be hearing the popping noise while I'm in neutral? I've been taking it on closed roads driving up and down and it NOW seems to be something loose maybe in the suspension. I hear it pop even cruising in neutral and especially over bumps, but can't hear it on the highway. so maybe just during slower speads i can notice it. i honestly can't tell if it's coming from the front or front and back. sway bar end link? i looked under the car and still couldn't see anything loose. moved things around and everything seems to be in place. Maybe something loose in the suspension? The problem is that the CEL did come on and is still on.

Will Mitsubishi pull the code for free? How much does it usually cost? What exactly do they do as far as reflash? Shouldn't affect my dynoflash right?

Not too worried about warranty, it's probably been voided a long time ago.

Thanks guys!

Goto your local AutoZone or automotive parts store... they will pull the code for free and only takes about a couple of minutes. It is abolsutely FREE. DO NOT goto the dealership to get a code pulled... they'll usually spend an outrageous amount of timing in doing so, and perhaps interrogate you with their questions.

Do not worry about reflashing anything or assuming something is wrong with every part of your car until you get the code pulled... then let us know.

ok friend had obdii so got the code pulled and it WAS P0300. So what now? I didn't have it reset. Should I take it to Mitsubishi?

Also the popping noise seems to be from the right pillowball or top end of the hks coilovers. Anyone else have these noises? I hear they are common, however it's weird that I have never had problems till now.

thanks

I've noticed the same sound on my 03. Sounds like a suspension pop coming from the front drivers side.
It is only occaisionally, and I can not get it to do it at will, so i haven't bothered with it much.

If anything, it seems to happen most often making a right turn over a few sharp bumps..

Any ideas? My car is bone stock..

well I have hks coilovers and the pillowmounts are aluminum, so in my case it's probably the metal parts clanking off each other.

your suspension is stock, so it may not be the same thing. i'd first open the hood and have someone bounce up and down on each side of the car and you check and see where the noise is coming from. i did this and i definetly heard it from the pillowmount or at least the top end up the coilover. but it sounded like popping against the chassis so most likely pillowmount.

i might get it checked out later, but doesn't seem like anything big for now.
