retarding the stock cams -5/-5 yields impressive gains and gives top end power

Pushing what? If you mean bringing the valves too close to the pistons... a HKS 280 degree cam straight up starts ramping the valve up before a stock cam at -5 degrees.

im gettin the works 269's and they come with springs and retainers in the package deal... they said you dont really need the cam gears cuz the cams already displace the power pretty well with just the cams themselves... and the sprigns and retainers will help with any idle issues i hope.
