That's why it was a bit of a suprise for me. I'm not one to ride the clutch, but I'm not short on it either. Nice easy shift each time.

Oh come on, that's not bad at all for an EVO. Here is one that saw some heat. Notice how it turned blue way below the disc surface. I have seen a lot worse though. I couldn't find the flywheel that we did some dyno friction slip testing on. Now that one's bad!

wow!

I didn't think that my heat marks were so bad, I was just most suprised by how warped it was with only 10k on the ticker

HEy ACTMAN, a quick off topic question: Your ACT street disc clutch for the Evo uses the factory disc right? If so I wanted to know if the MR disc is ok for use instead of the standard Evo disc with the ACT pressure plate of course.

This one shows about .022" of warpage which is pretty bad, but still usable if resurfaced. Since the EVO flywheel is forged you don't run the risk of catastrophic failure like most cast flywheels. Keep in mind that if the machine shop barely cleans this flywheel up they are taking far less material off behind the clutch disc where the material is needed to soak up the heat, and more off where it is not critical (toward the outside). Of course the ring gear will be slightly farther away from the starter, but certainly not enough to make any difference at all. The pressure plate will probably be about in the same location, but there is nothing critical there either. Any time a flywheel is resurfaced it should be rebalanced, but there are not many shops that do it correctly.

No, we use a modified Exedy aftermarket disc. The modifications are performance linings and less cushioning between the linings to help with quicker operation and less adjustment troubles. Our linings are steel backed for added burst and torsional strength. But there are always tradeoffs. If you use the stock MR disc, you will no doubt burn it up quicker and have more issues getting the clutch engagement where you would like it is used with our pressure plate. The benefit to what you are proposing is that the engagement will be easier to modulate and the MR disc has better noise reduction because of the WAD (wide angle damper) design. I imagine it is also a slightly lighter disc because they don't use steel backed linings.

Thanks. You're right, I was planning on re-using a stock MR disc to keep the noise down. SO far the stock MR clutch is holding damn good. 494whp on a dynojet with a stock clutch with zero slippage is amazing IMHO. I know its a waiting game till she lets go though.

Wow, the stock MR clutch can hold 494whp??? Holy crap! What are the differences between the MR clutch and the regular 5-speed stock clutches anyway?

Same pressure plate, different disc. Same friction material, just different dampening in the disc's hub for quieter operation.

So if the pressure plate and friction material are the same, the regular evo clutches should be able to hold just as much power then right?

I am replacing my setup with an ACT clutch and Toda Flywheel next week. I will take pics of my STOCK flywheel at 40k miles!!!

(edit) BTW: ACTman, why isn't ACT making a flywheel for the EVO? I really wanted one....
