Are you sure that it is not a freeze out plug? There have been many guys who have had these come loose or fall out.

i hope not, i guess i'll see when the timing cover comes off. I'm trying to see if I get it warrantied first, if not then i'll do it a month or 2 from now when i do the cams.

Yep, especially when the engine detonates bad enough to lift the head.

The pressure from combustion will pressurize the block momentarily with enough force to cause the water pump seal to weep coolant or push the freeze plugs/"core plugs" out of the block and in bad cases it'll blow the coolant hoses off or apart.

The problem is most of the time the engine won't show any head gasket problems because a metal head gasket will tend to hang in there a few times before it finally let's go.

ok fast foward to almost 6 months later and another 9k miles put on the car. back in May (my last post on this subject) I ended up getting the car warrantied by Wantagh mitsu. They replaced the water pump and T-belt and all have been fine. now its Nov 7th and my 2nd OEM water pump just started leaking. or so I believe. I have my friend taking a look at it as i type this on his lift to make sure its that and I've already called Wantagh to let them know i'll probably be bringing the car back this week. So now I have 17k on the car and i'll be getting mr 3rd water pump installed. I dont understand why this is happening??? anyone have any ideas???

You could try an electric water pump... Sounds like there is too much load for whatever reason on the OEM pump.

Belt tension
Pulley dragging harder than normal operating spec

Are the pumps plugged up, fouled, or dirty that your pulling out?

See if there is another mitsu dealership nearby that isn't as crooked.

You know they use the modification excuse as an opportunity to deny well deserved and paid for warranty claims.

Wow, only 17k and on the 3rd water pump already!?!? I just rolled over 61k and I'm on the stock water pump still. I chose not to replace it when I did the T-belt because I've heard water pumps can last over 100k.

I can confirm that, according to Alldata,

TT115-14-001 050401 Cooling System - Water Pump Failure

Core plug comes off... (paraphrased)

This can apply to 2004 and 2005 models.

I Love my Evo, I will keep it until it rusts out or gets t-boned by a cement truck--but I don't think I'll ever buy another new Mitsubishi or Mitsubishi based product. I have yet to ever see them stand behind any of their products, and thats with well over a decade of experience with a variety of dealerships across the country.

I follow the Subaru forums as well and have read very few issues, even when its apparent that someone went out and smoked the tranny in their STi on a drag strip--they seem to get replaced under warranty
