2nd gear grind?

I keep gringding 2nd gear occasionally when shifting at high rpms toward or at redline. I think my clutch since it worn out, im assuming its not engaging properly. Im affraid that my 2nd gear syncros might be shot . I will be changing the tranny fluids this weekend, any suggestions would be great in which fluid to use to help. Thanks

My boyfriend use to grind 2nd quite frequently and it really sucks 'cause you only grind when you're trying to show off or when it really counts....lol I bought him a B & M short shifter and it doesn't happen nearly as often. Probably only once since we got it. I don't know if it was a mental thing ('cause we had a short shifter in his previous car) or if it really does help.... but it would kind of make sense since the throws are shorter....

They should replace it under warranty if it's a syncro.

I have the same problem. At first thought it was me misshifting, but my buddy did it in mine too. It's just that gear, and I don't really know why. I do know it isn't my clutch. I've subsequently solved it by double clutching in that gear. Haven't tried a short shifter yet (but I might). I will be changing all my fluids in a couple of weeks when I get home.

sometimes its a mental thing, sometimes the gears are shot.. its kind of hard to tell since we cant drive it.. as far as fluid , try em all.. i use pennz. synchromesh.. but then again ur clutch could be shot..

The correct method, is to take it to your dealer if you've got warranty.

The easy way to test for bad syncros is hold in the clutch (while idling) and shift fast. If you crunch the gears its the syncro, if it doesn't, it's your clutch engagement.

Done that and it goes in fine! Ive got warranty but they wont fix it unless they feel the gear grinding, which only does it at high rpms when speed shifting I cant do that to show them, they will try to blame it on me

I know they have a history of cracking, but try the Weapon R dampener. Just installed it this weekend, and it has cured a lot of my shifting problems, and got rid of "lurch" when the engine is under load.

I was thinking of getting that. Does it really help that much?

I think so. The only thing that happened is that it transmitted a little engine noise into the cabin. I ordered some 1/16" neoprene (mousepad material). I'm going to make a template of the bracket, cut it out, and mount it under the bracket. Should get rid of the noise.

SOme guy was selling his on here. Check my write up under the transmission section on evolutionmr.net. THat will answer any problems you should have during the install.

this is a great post because this same thing is happening to me...only 2nd gear, and exactly of course, when im taking people for a ride, does it happen...the first time it happened was at the track. i was running the 1/4 and in my like 4th attempt i missed second and it sounded like sh--. it really pissed me off as i continued to do like a 19 second pass...haha, i didnt care, i was frustrated. it has happened like two other times and it is the worst feeling...i wanna get it fixed too but it really doesnt happen all the time. my car is still so new that i wouldnt think there would be a problem already...hanging out with other evo owners all the time didnt help though/owning an evo doesnt help cause its almost impossible to not get on it...anyways, i have the same problem as you with second gear...if it keeps happening, im going to try and get it fixed. we will see

Sounds to me like you're letting out the clutch a hair too soon.
