Electronic boost controller detailed explanation

I hope this isn't a stupid question. I'm trying to find out how the ebc on the market work. The Hks uses a stepper motor while the greddy and blitz use a solenoid? Can someone give me a detailed explanation of how these work and how they can be compatible with a standalone unit. I'm not looking for the which is the best answer just trying to learn how they work.

Thanks.

I know nothing about the HKS. The blitz, Greddy, and Apexi use a solonoid. They will control boost separately from the stand- alone ECU. If you want the stand alone ECU to control boost you take off the boost controller and use a GM solonoid or the solonoid of your choice and following the directions of your ECU you wire it, set - up the ECU, and modify the MAPS accordingly. Each is differant...the AEM has tables to set up, the Autronic uses the stock solonoid, and the XEDE uses the stock solonoid.
