Clatter noise
Clatter noise
I've noticed a slight "clattering" noise in my Evo. I notice the sound when idling in neutral with the shifter in the neutral/home position. When the clutch is out I hear a slight/faint clatter sound - its not very loud, kind of like a dull metallic rattle coming from behind the firewall. If I push the clutch in, it dissapears. Upon letting the clutch back out, the sound returns.
Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas as to what this could be. The car has been babied and has never been launched. It is a 2004, and is completely stock. The car is driving perfect so Im not that worried about it. Could it be throwout-bearing noise? Anyone else had anything like this? Perhaps Im just being paranoid....
Thanks for any and all info

I hear the noise whenever I am in neutral and the clutch is not engaged. The engine does not need to be warmed up to make the sound. Its not a very loud sound. I know these cars make alot of noise from the brakes/suspension/engine......but I dont think my car always made this sound.
Perhaps Im worrying over nothing - maybe its just a "noisy" clutch......if thats even possible.....

I have the same exact problem in my 03. I am starting to stress over it because the problem has not always been there. No problem shifting just this noise. I would love a definitive answer on this from Someone like John Shephard.
Sounds like the through out bearing.. If it gets much worse i would have it replaced.. I notice mine makes some noise but not enough to make me think it is anything other then a loud through out bearing. (Its pretty much done it since new)
But without hearing yours it is hard to tell if it is worse.

It could also be beat up sprung hub assembly, loose flywheel, transmission bearings, damaged gear teeth or the splines on the input shaft are wearing out under 5th gear....let's hope that it's nothing serious.
Do you notice it more when it's hot or cold?

FWIW Mine happens hot or cold. It started shortly after I noticed the problem with the 5th gear syncro. I found this problem after grinding it in a couple of times at redline. I have not had the tranny serviced. For now I am just easing it into 5th at lower RPMs.
The sound occurs regardless of wether the engine is warm or cold. My evo has only 16000 miles and has never been to the track/strip. I baby it, and changed all the driveline fluids at 10000. I switched to BG synchromesh in the tranny......maybe over the weekend Ill switch to the stock or redline fluid and see if this has any effect.
As I already mentioned the sound is not extremely loud......it could easily go unnoticed......

I get the same "clatter" in my '03 with just under 21k miles. Where I really notice it is when the AC or defroster is on, at idle. If I put the (stock) clutch down, the noise goes away almost entirely but comes back when the clutch is released. It has been this way since it was new and is still there when the compressor is not on, but it is much less noticable.
I still have the stock clutch which seems to be holding up fine and I have no problem with grinding gears. The only other possible "complaints" I have are: 1) The clutch is grabby when cold, particularly when in reverse, and the car will shudder if I don't feather it with higher rpms. 2) I get the loud gravel-like deceleration snarl from the transmission. It has always been there and I've grown used to it.
I don't launch the car, but I have been known to row through the gears quickly. The worst abuse the clutch has ever seen is some feathering while driving the car onto ramps in the garage.
Jon, do you think these symptoms warrant taking it to a shop to have it looked at?
