Changing only (1) cam - pro's/con's???

Is there any benefit in just changing out one cam?

i.e.:

1) stock intake cam/ 264 or 272 or 280 exhaust cam
2) stock exhaust cam/ 264 or 272 or 280 intake cam

Also, would doing this require a fuel pump upgrade?
Has anyone done just the one cam change?

Thanks in advance...

you should upgrade your fuel pump before even upgrading the cams.

why would you do only one ? it's will cost you double the price of labor and tuning.

Labor and Tuning are free...

Anyone??? Is this possible - pro's/con's? I'm looking to retain the stock fuel pump - not to max out the stock injectors - keep boost no higher than 21 psi (spikes) and to increase exhaust gas velocity...

Fuel Pump aside, I'm most interested about getting info on only changing 1 cam - in my case just the exhaust side cam...

If you are wanting to change only the exhaust cam go to a 264 but honestly I think you would get better resutls going to a 264 intake cam and keeping the stock exhaust cam. This is just my .02 but I think it would work out best. Fuel pump not needed.

Anything bigger than a 264 in on the stock exhaust cam will probably not benifit you much but I could be wrong I have wondered the same thing myself before. As well as a 280 intake with a 272 exhaust might be the best of both world combo.

So 264 intake cam and stock exhaust cam... Would this result in a tq increase or hp invrease?

My goal is to:
1) retain the stock fuel pump
2) increase torque as opposed to hp
3) prevent "idel lope"
4) etc. ...

I'll be glad to play the guinea pig - but I need to know if the 264in (or) the 264ex cam will increase torque.

Cam gurus, chime in...

It would increase both but more so on the torque side from my understanding. Torque is the reason why most people starting doing the 272in and 264ex. Also Subaru owners do a similar thing, more duration and lift on the intake than the exhaust but the motors are different but still similar theory.

Hopefully somone who has tested this can chime in. I haven't tested it so I can't say to how much it would increase and what the exact difference would be.

Did some quick reading and I believe that the overall consensus is that to increase torque you have to change out the "intake" cam. Doing so will essentially allow the engine to "breathe" better and to make more power.

Cheaper indeed. What if it turns out that the intake cam is the only cam that really improves tq/hp numbers - kind of like the lower v/s upper intercooler piping misconception (where the upper pipe is for show and the lower pipe is for go). Would'nt that leave a couple feathers ruffled
