Please help with my clutch issue

I recently purchased a 2003 lightly modded with an HKS twinplate clutch in it (recently installed by PO local dealer). Initially everything was fine (the clutch was very noisy but operated fine). Soon it started occasionally acting funny....when you put the clutch in the pedal felt strange...almost like ABS feels on the brake pedal and it made nasty sounds and was difficult to get in and out of gear (see this thread for details https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=143970)

Yesterday I lost all use of the clutch. Nothing noteworthy happened....I just pushed the clutch in pulled it out of gear to roll to a stop....and then it would not go into 1st at all. I ended up having to shut the car off, put it in first, then start in first to get rolling. After that I could shift (still ugly) by rev matching and "forcing" it into gear. Once I was in a gear pushing the clutch pedal all the way down only resulted in the slightest change in RPM and the clutch pedal feels very light/icky like the only resistance is the spring on the pedal. (note...when in gear the clutch does not slip....WOT in higher gears...no slipping.

Today I got a friend to push on the pedal while I was underneath and the movement of the slave cylinder on the clutch fork is *very* minimal....it is right about 1/4 inch of movement which seems like not enough to me (could be wishful thinking ;-)

Any thoughts on this? How much range is the clutch fork supposed to have? Can I adjust the action on the slave cylinder....the rod under the dash adjusts where the clutch catches....it would impact this correct?

Thanks so much!

For the record: I tried adjusting the pedal all the way out....at which point the car pulled out of the garage (the clutch still feels "icky") and made it down the road but the clutch was slipping. I then adjusted about halfway back out and it goes without slipping now but still shifts poorly and feels like crap....

It looks like the HKS twinplate is just kaput...can you say "New Clutch"... Ugh!

Your clutch is toast, you have no clutch material left! time for the Exedy twin! My car has done the exact same thing!

On a normal clutch the car starts slipping in high load situations in higher gears which this one has not done. BUT....now that you mention it...the symptoms always get worse the longer/harder I drive it like it gets hot then craps.

Does the twinplate function differently enough to cause this behavior? If it is just the clucth discs I could probably get an HKS "rebuild kit" for cheaper and still have a really nice clutch??? That would be nice....

I had a kevlar/metal segmented clutch in my WRX that exhibited similar symptoms to what you are mentioning, just not as bad. One day just began to feel real bad. Still gripped in street situations, but shuddered and engagement was wildly inconsistent. Took it to the track and under those high load situations, it wouldn't hold, even in 1st gear. Over the next week or so it started to slip on the street. When it came out that weekend there was no kevlar left, just the metal buttons and they were severly worn, as well as the flywheel. Anyway good luck.

How long have you had the clutch? time and miles. Yeap..I hate to say this as well but it sounds like your clutch is worn out. I have had a few cases of the Exedy Twin plate clutch prematurely wearing out in most cases less than 6 months and I know you said that you have the HKS. There is alot of info on the premature clutch wear on this site I suggest you do some research but it really just sounds like the clutch is shot! Like you said a Fidanza/ACT will work just fine!! Trini...

I just recently bought the car....and have not put 500 miles on it yet. I did notice at one point where the PO was searching on the forum here for an HKS rebuild kit <snort> He had the documentation where/when the clutch was installed and I assumed (my bad obviously) that it was OK since it wasn't very long ago (cannot recall offhand but...less than a year for sure)

Regardless I am feeling positive about it being the clutch discs themselves...not something broken <grin>

Does anyone know if the flywheel the HKS setup uses can be used with another clutch (ACT) or will I have to get another flywheel as well? This is of course assuming the HKS flywheel isn't bad off <grin>

Thanks all!

I thought the "twin-plates" no longer uses the flywheel, as the twin are 1 unit with a built-in flywheel. If the discs warp due to excessive heat, then they will act goofy also. good luck and keep us posted!
