2nd gear grind
You're shifting too fast for the synchros to do their job, that is to smoothly shift from gear to gear. If you go faster than the synchro will work than either you need to slow your shifts down or your synchro is bad (or both!). For me it was both, and got the synchros replaced under warranty. if you shift slowly and this still happens, take it to Mitsu.
sic its a common prob in evos. There are 2 ways to get by it. If you want to slam shift into 2nd, you can do it at 6600 rpm without grinding "usually" doesnt hurt performance since first dies off so quick and you will be at max torque when you hit 2nd. If you want to shift at higher rpms, when you hit 7500 or whatever, push in the clutch and wait 1/2 second before pulling it out of gear. Mine does this but I have learned to live with it and avoid it 99% of the time.
^^ exactly and you really have to make sure you're shifting correctly and not just slamming gears, it can really hurt your transmission. BTW, Sic you car may very well have crappy synchros from the factory, why do you think i got mine replaced? There is a service bulletin on this problem specifically.

This may sound stupid but I had the same grind going into second gear. I moved the seat up an inch or two closer to the dash and have not ground the gears since. Give it a try can't hurt.

Seat adjustment does help reduce the chance of grinding 2nd but once in a While it still happens to me. Usually I'll get it while making a turn and trying to grab second relatively fast while cornering. Chances are the engine is moving around in it's mounts and making it tougher for things to lineup. I'm considering a shift kit and some stiffer engine mounts to head off this quirk, can anyone suggest what to look at?
I think alot of us had this problem with second gear and all I can say is chances are it's driver error. I changed the way I shifted into second and haven't had a problem since so I came to the conclusion that it was me. You might want to try to engage the clutch fully before you begin your shift I noticed that I was shifting with my hand quicker than I was pressing down on the clutch. The Evo trans is not as easy to shift as others but it can be done correctly. My trans also needed till about 3,500 miles or so to shift smoother so I would suggest that people with low miles and this problem take it easy till it breaks-in.
This 2nd gear grind happens in my car too. It is NOT driver error, otherwise, I'd be grinding the other gears. I only grind 2nd, and it seems to happen daily now. My seat is pretty far up, ever since I had the car. I clutch all the way to the floor EVERY single time too. I'm sure if it was a problem with engine mounts, etc, the tuners' cars would be grinding all the time, since they have even more power to thrash the motor around (my car is stock). I say it is a factory defect.
