help....whats the benefits of cam gears

i know this has most likely been talked about to death. but i just need a lil help on understand cam gears. yes i know someone will say "USE THE SEARCH BUTTON" but we all know doin that ends up with just countless threads that normally dont answer the question at hand.

so heres my question......what the main benefit to having cam gears with aftermarket cams. from what i understand cams will help u place power in different spots in the rpm range. help control a lopey idle. effect timing as well. if theres more to cam gears than that please let me know.

THANKS FOR THE HELP, for me and anyone else who doesnt understand cam gears.

Wow. That was constructive. How bout instead of repeating what he said about search you drop some knowledge on us newbs. I'd also be curious. I've heard D. Buschur say cam gears are not that important while S. Vishnu say they're one of the first things he puts on a car.

They are not important really to get decent usage of the cams. You will need them for really crappy cams as they will be off and you will need to 'degree' the cams (Ensuring they are at zero degrees when the cam gears read zero) but on decent cams you shouldnt need to degree them (HKS cams are normally pretty close). You could use the cam gears to adjust the timing more... you could advance the intake and retard the exhaust, or advance both or a combination of whatever you want. I dont know that much about tuning with cam gears but I would imagine it really doesnt make too much of a difference except at extremely high boost, extremely high revs or to help idle. I am not really the smart one when it comes to that though but I know plenty of people that dont have cam gears that are making well over 500 to the ground so I would say its not too important. Just for the info also, I know a few people that do have cam gears and none of them are adjusted at all except for one which he has adjusted while he degreed his cams and there is no real 'adjustment'. Dont know if that helped any

Cam Gears allow you to move around your powerband. Imagine a balloon that you squeeze and it gets bigger in some areas, smaller in others. This is your powerband and this is what happens when you make adjustments.

I do not think they are necessary unless you want more/less in a certain area of your powerband.

fine tuning cams, you'll get better top end but giving up a little in the lower rpm's, same results without cams.
