i think the 4g64 block is about an inch or so longer than the 4g63.

If you goto a over bore of 87MM, the only company that I know of that makes head gaskets is Cometic. Some people have experienced issues with head gaskets blowing on DSMs with 2.4 swaps, but I have not heard any issues on Evos.

The standard length of a 4g64 rod is exactly the same as a 4g63, that is why I would not recommend the hybrid, unless you have custom rods made. There is no point in the swap, as you could get the same from a 4g63.

The only differences between the two blocks is the 6MM deck height on the 4g64 and that the 4g63 already has pre-drilled holes for the oil squiters. The blocks are the same in every other dimension other than standard bore size and deck height.

The only reason to do the hybrid with a 2.4, is you can run a 87MM bore and get custom length rods. This would give you better rod ratio, which equals less piston stress and not shove the piston rings so close togther. All this would allow for a increased rpm redline to 8000 to 8500 rpms, versus a 7500 for a 2.3 4g63.

While both could be reved higher, the 2.4 with longer rods would last longer and produce more torque.

If the needs on the evo are the same as DSM's, then all you need is the head gasket, cam sprockets and timing belt and that's it. Everything else should be exactly the same. Go with the bigger size and less revs and you'll be happy. I'm running a 2.4 in my galant vr4 right now and it's night and day better than the old 2.0 setup

so the only thing different between the 2.3 and 2.4 is that the 2.4 has a 87mm bore and to take advantage of the 2.4 would only be by getting custom rods?

I have a question. The only point then about boring a block is torque? My evo dynos at 550hp on dinojet and stock block and head and I rev to 8000-8500. Well If I blow my engine then I'm gonna have buschur built my block and they could built it so it can withhold easily 800 hp. So what you recommend?

800 awhp can be done.....but why? You can build an 800 awhp evo, but unless your a tuning shop using it for a project to sell product it doesn't make sence. Evo's aren't drag cars, they're auto-x/ road race/ badass street cars. An Evo drivetrain will break quickly under short dragrace conditions, but under the prolonged abuse of auto-x/ road race/ street conditions.......come on. I will say it's not a bad idea to have an 800 hp capable engine only putting out 400-500 hp, you don't want to run an engine at the edge if you don't have to.

I think there's a specific block (4G64) you can use that doesn't require adapters.. I think its from the Montero or Eclipse (2003 or so) I remember this being posted in a thread a while ago for the 2.4 stroker by RNR Racing. I'm not sure if that year 2.4 block has oil squirters already, but the motor mount locations are the same as the Evo.

This convesion, can, and has, been done.. Its advantage is the higher deck and longer stroke, but you won't want to spin the engine over 7500rpm (realistically it probably can go higher, but I wouldn't run it higher) The advantage of the higher deck is not requiring a relocated wristpin in the piston, and the geometry of the stroke isn't as severe from side to side (when the crank is 90 degrees to the rod) due to the increased deck height.

Otherwise there's very little difference between the stroker conversions and using a 2.4 block, the difference is the redline due to the geometry.. and even at that, its not a huge difference. You will need a longer timing belt from a 2.4 Galant SOHC (I think) since it was the right length and I am fairly sure you can use the EVO cam gears (as far as I know their the same anyway)

the 4g63 and the 4g64 cam gears are slightly different as far as the timing marks are concerned. if you use the 4g63 cam gears with the 4g64 block the timing marks on the cam gears will not be lined up like they are supposed to be when the engine is at tdc. the dowel pins are supposedly a little off from the two. this is why the 4g64 cam gears are used along with the 4g64 timing belt.

Guy im gonna shed some light on the situation. I dont know why you would need any kind of block adaptors. The 4G64 and the 4G63 are made from the same block casting, which means all the holes are the same. In a 4G63, all they do is deck the block down shorter and add oil squiters. Before anyone starts to get an attitude or flame me, understand where I am coming from. I own a 99' Galant with a 4G64 as the stock motor, I currently run a EVO VII engine in my car, I know the ins and outs of it. All the holes from the head to the block line up. You do NOT need to change the cam gears, the teeth are exactly the same spacing and the timing is fine, as far as the timing belt is concerned, you cant just grab any 4G64 timing belt and put it on. The only year that the transverse 4G64 came with DOHC was in the 1994 Galant, so you would need a timing belt for a 94' Galant DOHC. I am currently helping a friend of mine build a Hybrid 4G64 with an EVO head for his Galant, rods are same length, you just need pistons with the right pin offset, JE and Wiseco already make them, they are an off the shelf piston. As far as putting the engine in the car, I cant see it being any different, I put the EVO motor into my car fine and it should be the same vise versa.

Just a note, plenty of 4g64 owners rev their motors to 8k with no problem on a daily basis. Dont really understand where people are getting the 7500 figure. For the guy that says the Evo is not a drag car and its pointelss to get 800 hp, isnt that the case with almost any mass production car. I think the evo can be as good of a drag car as any other. Roadracing is not the only car sport in the world, people do enjoy other forms of racing.
