ACT clutches.

I am getting my tranmission rebulit. The Mitsu tech told me My clutch is bad. Now the Clutch never slipped, when driving it pulls very hard, and has less than 20,000miles on it. Its an Act clutch. The question I have is - How long does the Act clutch last. I was thinking about just changing the disk , Throw bearing and getting flywheel resurfaced. Any advice thanks in advance.

I would go to the ACT website and ask them. They gave me some good input when I asked about their products.

No feedback would be better then theirs.

That is very hard to say how long a clutch will last. I worry about anything a dealership recommends but I can't tell you if the clutch is bad without looking at it and/or measuring it. If you can get the disc and measure it with some micrometers, or send a couple photos I would be glad to take a look. For reference, the disc starts off about .315" thick when compressed. It is worn out at about .240" roughly. Whatever you do, get the parts back! Don't let them just toss the parts like most dealerships do.

We may even be able to just put linings on the disc and really save some green, but that is only speculating without seeing the parts. My email is dstarksen@advancedclutch.com. I am not able to get my work email outside the office yet though so most likely I won't see it until Monday. You can post here if you want.

Thanks for the reply. I spoke to someone from ACT and he told me that, I could use the same pressure plate. All I would have to do is get the flywheel resurfaced. From what I saw Friday the disk is worn not bad but worn. My intentions was to change it any way. THANKS FOR THE REPLY AGAIN. I am so Happy with MY ACT CLUTCH. I WOULD NOT USE NO OTHER CLUTCH IN THE CAR.

Thanks for the confidence in our products.

Is it normal not to be able to shift as fast into 3rd and 4th gear at 7800rpms with the ACT rather than the stocker?

I have had problems shifting into 3rd and 4th at high rpms since the ACT install. It grinds everytime in 3rd and won't go into gear....4th gear grinds but goes into gear. This never happened on the stock clutch and my shifting techniques have not changed.

Any idea?

When upgrading the clutch, did you also remove the clutch restrictor and/or replace the stock line with a SS line?

the restrictor has been gone for a long time...but i didn't upgrade to SS line.

also, listining today...i have a new "whine" type noise coming from the tranny or transfer case. Its almost a very minor grind, but it makes a whine noise(not like standard decel tranny whine). It only makes the noise with the clutch pedal out(not on the floor).

Any ideas what this could be?

If the noise disappears (or changes) when you put pressure on the clutch pedal, then the noise is almost certainly the throwout bearing (also called release bearing)

Keep in mind that a lot of the time it's not the clutch but the flywheel. The stock flywheel is very light weight but is prone to warpage and a common mistake is to blame the clutch (even a stock clutch) for the problem when indeed it's usually the OE flywheel. My recommendation would be to replace the OE flywheel with one containing a replaceable steel friction area, like one from RPS or Works.

A small adjustment at the pedal improves the slow shifting to as good as or better than stock. Keep in mind that on the EVO the correct release/engagement point is usually higher than what seems comfortable. I am not sure about the noise, but it could be normal gear noise. Our disc uses a different center section than stock. The springs in the disc are there to reduce noises, but they don't always do a good job since there is a compromise between noise and performance.

I am in a similar situation. I have the stock clutch (14k miles) and took it in for a rattle noise that many people here told me was the throwout bearing rattling.

There was a TSB for the reverse idler assembly, so they replaced that under warranty, but they said it did not fix the rattle sound. The tech said it might be something loose inside the transmission, but most likely it was the clutch and/or flywheel.

They are giving me the car back, since there are no problems driving it (just the noise), but now I'm shopping for a clutch and doing my homework.

I'm hoping somebody who had the TOB rattle and had some clutch work done can positively say that's the cause of the noise -- because most of the responses I got sounded more like speculation than mechanical expertise. I'm definitely leaning towards an ACT clutch if I do get it replaced (and the dealer recommended them as well).

BTW, I don't think this dealer is trying to fleece me. It's Alexandria and they have a great reputation in the D.C. area.

It's 5pm and no email. It may have gotten filtered out by our server but I didn't see it in my spam. The problem is that I am going on vacation until next Tuesday. Sorry. I will catch up when I get back.
