To pump, or not to pump?
To pump, or not to pump?
I have just recently purchased my Evo from another member. He told me all the tunning was done by David Buschur. Also the car seems to be running very rich, the area above and around the exhaust gets black pretty fast, and when at idle you can smell gas. The wierd thing is, with big cam's and 780cc injector's the car still has the stock fuel pump. Is this safe or even normal? Sometimes the car takes a few cranks to get it started, I am wondering if I need a bigger fuel pump. Keep in mind I am already running rich.
Ok here is my current list of mods:

HKS EVC 5 Boost Controller (21.5 psi)
HKS RS Intake
HKS SSQV BOV
Buschur Deluxe Intercooler
Buschur Upper Intercooler Piping
Buschur Mini-Battery Kit
Grounding Kit
Tein S-Tech Springs

usually its wanted to ensure a supply to the demand of those injectors. However that shouldn't really richen you up more since the pressure will remain the same on the system.
The reason it takes a bit to start is due to the stand alone. Most standalone's have to sinc with the cam and crank sensors to know it's all good to go. This takes a couple revolutions. After that she fires right up and knows where it is.
The turbo back is running straight pipe right? Should be if i remember correctly. That means that you'll smell some of that fuel due to no cat to absorb it. If you have a highflow cat in there then you'll still smell it slightly. Mostly due to the idle of the 272's. It's a big cam set with lopy idle usually. Anyway, the black is normal since you'll be running a little rich on those cams at idle and since your running pump gas you have to be a little rich up top to keep her safe. Happens to all of us. Took 2 days for my muffler to be totally covered from when it was new... and that's with the HFC.
If you suspect your to rich go into a dyno and get a retune of the ecu. The only real thing i see wrong with your setup is the stocker pump. It's not a no no, but it's just common practice(for safety) to upgrade it.

Like i said... guys have worked the car out with the stock pump and bigger injectors for a long time. It's not a requirement at all... just good practice to ensure you have it if needed.
As far as what i see though you're all good and normal. The car runs fine/boosts well/and is reliable right? Then i'm not seeing an issue.
When I mentioned having trouble starting the car, I should have been more specific. Every once and while I will go to start my car and it will turn over then instantly die, the wierd thing is I will try many more time's and it will continue to die (also does not react to giving it more gas). After 10 or so tries it will fire right up like it never had a problem.
Sound like there maybe a sinc problem with the ecu. Not that it'll hurt anything but when you get the chance at least call your closest rep and ask if there's any updates for it. Maybe they can assist you in loading them or maybe hook you up for traveling to them if there are.
I know the AEM does this to us alot. If it ever dies on the start it takes a couple tries... it's like it faults out or something. But then it just fires right up as if there was never a problem.
One thing... don't touch the gas on the car until she fires over. The ecu's don't really like starting under load. I don't really think it's a big issue but it's one worth addressing in regards of a possible firmware/software upgrade.
