Older 4G63s tick like crazy. My 97 GS-T was embarrassing. I'd go through the drive through at a restaurant and they would ask me what was wrong with my car.

I cured that one by running 20w50 oil in it.. Silenced it immediately. I'm not saying you should put oil that heavy in an Evo, but I've also heard lots of 4G63s tick after certain cam installs.

My 04 with only 5K miles on it ticks and it's the stock valvetrain. My buddy with an 04 w/ 12K miles on it ticks as well. I was extremely worried about my car until I listened to his one day and it's even louder than mine.

hmm my old 2G eclipse ticket but thats because of the older lifters... My EVO doesnt tick at all, maybe only after I just change the oil the engine sounds a little louder but after a 100 miles or so its back to quiet.... The EVO is definately not as loud as all Honduh's I've heard. Especially my GF's 01' GSR.

weird, 97 is when they updated the lifters...

Anyway is the poster sure it's not just the injectors they are hearing? They are damn close to the head... Try to find a big tube or something to put your ear up to and ensure the noise isn't coming from them...

Same here! I've got 264s cams though. Usually when the oil is not warmed up I hear the ticking, but at least it's not all the time.

I've got the ticking after my Jun 272s too. Qn is: are there ANY detrimental effects or perf loss due to this ticking (possibly from not bleeding e lash adjusters) at all then?

TIA.

Next place to look if you know the lifters are good is oil pressure.
Another thing they are not particularly known for being great at is oil pressure at idle and reliable oil pumps.

3700 miles, stock, 2005 Evo and I've got the tick too... it seems to quiet down once the car warms up and it can't be heard when you're actually driving, but its good to know its normal.

Its nice to have such a good search engine on this site too!

Mine makes noise right there next to the gears on the ex and in too.

I doubt its the lifters or such on mine, I suspect the #1 bearing caps are making the noise.

There is much more surface to surface area on those caps compared to the others. Secondly it's a deep tight fit and may not lube as well too.

Nonetheless, its allways good to monitor noises just in case of something else.

you should not tick, its not normal, if you bleed the lifters correctly, and pump them back up the right way you will not have probs... here read..
