Question New tranny stiff shifting

Just installed new tcase/tranny from TRE at the stealership. I'm out of state for a few months and had to have the girlfriend pick up the car. So, unfortunately I'm troubleshooting from a distance having her follow my instructions via cellphone trying to describe sounds...nightmare!

The primary issue I'm wondering about now is why it is so darn hard for her to shift the tranny. She drove it before on stock drivetrain and with the clutch in it shifted like butter in every gear. When the car engine/ignit is OFF, it goes through the gears perfectly now. As soon as she turns the engine on she claims it is VERY DIFFICULT to shift. Especially to reverse. Warmup was NEVER a factor with the stock tranny. And she says its still stiff after 15 min of driving. I don't want her to force and break something.

Why would it butter through power off, then practically seize when the engine is turned on? Am I missing something about tranny fundamentals here?...clutch? It sounds weird!

My clutch is the same cusco twin I was using before and it was very streetable. I NEVER had the least bit of trouble shifting it before engine on or off. HELP!

I'd take it back to Mitsu and ask them, but they'd blame the "aftermarket tranny". (another long story) At this stage, I just wanted to get it out of their shop. They resented my working with TRE!

Did the dealership top off the fluid? Maybe theres air in the clutch line causing the clutch to not disengage fully.

The clutch is dragging on the flywheel and is not an issue related to the transmission.

This will cause the input shaft to want to keep on turning and the synchronizers are blocking her from shifting the transmission.

This is why it will shift fine when the engine is not running.

Things to check:

Have the hydraulic fluid completely flushed & bled free of any air in the system.

If your clutch pedal is properly adjusted, if your shifter cables aren't damaged and properly fastened.

Make certain your clutch is in proper working order; that the clutch disc is not bent or out of true (because whoever installed the transmission let the transmission hang by the input shaft)...this is more common that one thinks.

If you have the correct oil in the transmission (we recommend any Synchromesh or Synchroshift type oil, use BG #2 for road racing) and you can raise the clutch pedal off the floor at least 3 inches (75mm) before the car even thinks about moving than you shouldn't have a problem with shifting the transmission.

*** TRE CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT TIP *** Have the car on hoist while checking the clutch threshold. Clutch threshold is the term for when the clutch just grabs enough to make the wheels on the car turn. Having the car in the air is the reality check for clutch threshold and weather or not your clutch is dragging on the flywheel.

Send me a PM if you have any other questions.
