The foam filters are not supposed to be cleaned. Using water will cause the foam to break down. Compressed air just breaks apart the foam. It is recommended to have these replaced and not cleaned. I think you are confusing this filter with a crappy k&n filter.

Crappy K&N filter? Are you nuts or just making an uneducated statement? The HKS is one of the poorest filtering elements on the market...

I'm not talking about blowing the filter apart. Its sturdy enough to take an air pig or 3hp compressor and gently spray any dust or dirt off the element. And if water breaks it down, we'd all be screwed because this thing does get wet when you drive in the rain.

I still don't understand why everyone keeps saying that water causes the foam to break down. I bought a new filter and when I took the old one out I figured he'll if I try to wash it and it gets messed up then I lose nothing, I soaked it in a sink and squeezed all the dirt out, made it clean as possible. Still didn't fall apart, I then tried using some soap and covered each side with soap and let it float in a bucket of soap and water, flipped it over and did each side. Rinsed it out again and let it dry, it is now exactly like the brand new filter I recieved, it's got a few deep dirty spots left in it that cannot be removed but there isn't any dirt or dust like it was previously. So order a new one, wash the old one...if it works then use it if not ditch it, not that hard.

FUNNY, i never mentioned anything about how good or bad the HKS filter was, but thanks for proving a personal point about how quickly i would upset someone with my statement.

If done repeatly over time like you can with the K&N, the filter will begin to fall apart. This might take 30 or more times of washing it to happen, but eventually it will happen. The filter is also treated with oil to help stop the flow of dirt and debris so once you wash it, it is very hard to get it oiled again properly. do yourself a favor and do as hks suggests and buy a new filter every 3-4k miles. i change mine every time i get the oil changed.

Best way to clean.
1. Take out of bowl shaped thing.
2. Throw in trash.
3. Spend $20+ at favorite vendor...Lancershop, GNV, etc.
4. Put new one in bowl thingy.
5. Wonder why can't afford anything else because you just spend $20+ on $.35 of material.

I do that every 7k miles. damn you HKS.

you know what... this is kinda funny... cuz nowhere does it mention that apexi has the smallest cone inlet diameter and hks the largest. nowhere does it say that k&n filters clog up the maf more cuz they use oils after "maintenence". nowhere does it say how much dirt they put on the filters, no measurements. it was just all done "fairly". whatever man...
