Talking High rpm gear lockout SOLVED!!

So I had the same problem as alot of many other evo owners with the ACT clutch, where at high rpms you would get locked out of gear.

changed the gearbox....same thing
changed the gearbox oil....same thing
adjusted the pedal just short of a million times..same thing
installed a braided clutch line.....same thing...

so I got so fedup i bought the RPS twin disc, carbon carbon clutch....problem solved!
I know it was an expensive fix...i figure any twin disc would solve the problem.

as for the clutch.......simply amazing...it's so hard not to drive hard all the time since i am still in the breaking in period. but so far so good....no complaints...the pedal feel is slightly harder than stock though, but there is no rattling noise as with some other twin discs.

so i'm off to racing this wknd providing that i break in that sucker...

I'm glad this worked for you, and I hope that you have the same success after 15-20 hard launches and runs at the drag strip. I'm also glad to hear it doesn't rattle a lot, but we should probably wait until you have worn it in and driven it a bit before getting too excited.

Unfortunately, though, this does not help the majority of us who can't be spending that much on such a crazy clutch. In fact, we shouldn't HAVE to spend that much on such a clutch. The single-disks should not be causing such a problem, and it's imperative that someone figure out what is going on. If everyone who owns an Evo has to buy a twin-disk clutch just to make use of the car through racing, then the Evo suddenly drops many notches on the performance car scale. Additionally, sales of ACT single-disk clutches will go to near 0 for Evos, but I'm not sure that matters in the grand scheme of their business.

^i totally agree with u warrtalon.
I am looking for 10's while still being a daily driver.....so for my case I had to fork out the cash and get a good clutch....it had to happen at some point in time, but due to the act problem, it made me react earlier.

only reason i went with the act was because i saw that turbotrix was using it, so i thought why not.

i also agree with u that people should not have to go and spend in excess of $1200USD for a twin disc. that's just ridiculous esp for the guy that rarely races his car.

i really hope that u guys get this problem worked out. In my opinion, ACT should improve on customer service and support and at least investigate this problem.

because it's crap that i spent $500USD on a clutch that serves me no purpose. I dont even think i can get it sold (just to recover some of my money) because no one would want to buy problems.

I think they have great customer service and support, but they're getting hit pretty hard right now by all of us bring this up at once and the fact that they don't have a "test bed" with which to track down all of these problems. It's good that they are TRYING to get something worked out through RRE, but the opportunity has not arisen quite yet, so I'm not sure what they can do in the near term. I am pretty sure there are no other manufacturers of single-disks that are working directly with a major Evo vendor to solve this problem. In fact, they're probably all flying beneath the radar without any clue that this is a common problem while selling their single-disk clutches to hapless Evo owners who will never have a clue as to what is causing the problem.

If ACT could figure out the cause of this problem, then figure out a way to prevent it, they would probably rocket their way to the top of all clutch sales for Evos, but as it stands now, anyone who reads our warnings would be hard pressed to even touch an ACT w/street disk...

What the hell i dont know what to get now? I deff dont have that deep of a pocket(1200 and up). I was told that if you adjust the rod that it fixes the problem, or buy an aftermarket one?

^^^Word to the wise. Beg, borrow, steel, take the bus to work, etc., and get an Exedy twin or comparable clutch. Its your baby after all, and she deserves the best.

For a moment there I got excited when I saw this thread thinking that there might ACTUALLY be a fix for this issue, as the high RPM lockout plagues me too with my RRE X-clutch.

This part of your comment stood out to me. I know that RRE uses the X-clutch (or they did at one point) in their blue car. What I'm wondering is if these shops (RRE and you also mentioned TurboTrix) have attempted to resolve the high-rpm lockout with the ACT/X-clutch or if they went ahead and swapped out to a twin-disk like you did.

Warrtalon, you mentioned something about RRE trying to get something going. I really do hope they get a fix.

I haven't seen any comments from anyone regarding whether or not a clutch release rod would correct the high-rpm lockout. At only $31 it's definitely worth a try. Any thoughts on this?
