Burning oil / running rich?

Today the 3rd person since I have owned my car has paced me on the highway or around town and told me my car is burning oil and I always tell them no, its cause I'm running rich. It has to be when I'm shifting gears because some times I can see a little black smoke out the rearview! The car runs great and I have no mechanical problems that I know. I'm guessing its a rich tune, and no cats?

any ideas?

these are my mods...

Perrin 3" Turbo Back Exhaust With O/C Vent Silencer *silencer in*
Ultimate Racing Cat Delete
Borla Exhaust Manifold
Buschur Upper Intercooler Pipe, HKS SSQV bov
HKS RS Racing Suction Intake
HKS 264 Exhaust/Intake Cams
Denso 660cc Fuel Injectors
Walbro 255 Fuel Pump
Custome street tune by Dynoflash

thanks!

It's fuel it does that if you VTA. You will also get fuel all over your bumper. If it was oil it would be bluish

Sorry to bring this thread up again and ask a real noob question...
Today while shifting at 7k my friend saw a puff of black smoke. It happens only when i am driving aggressively and shifting at 6k-7k. Just a puff of black smoke when shifting and then everything is ok. Is this normal? There is no oil on the bumper.
I am completely stock. No mods. Had a oil/filter, air filter change recently.

edit: I shouldn't be running rich rather I should be having the problem of running too lean as the fuel is horrible here. So, that is another reason I don't understand the smoke.

Need some input guys...Thanks

My car is completely stock and when I shift hard at redline it will shoot some black smoke between shifts.

I've had it happen on some of my previous cars too and its usually pretty normal and running rich. They tune it from the factory to run rich at high rpm to be safer.

Black= fuel
Blue= Oil
White=Coolant

Edit: btw you're seeing it because of the cat delete. Put the cat back in and it will almost go away completely.

well, the smoke only comes when shifting at redline. and its only a puff.
So I guess ZK is right...the car runs rich at high rpms just to protect
the engine from leaning out.

But why when shifting only? why not steadily throughout the 6k-7k rpm??

only thing I can speculate is that you may have too much blow by from crank case. when PCV valve opens after you let off throttle, it will inject hot gas + oil into the intake. then, you get a puff smoke?
Try oil catch can or VTA the PCV .

Thats exactly what I was thinking. If this is the case, it should happen to
everyone without an oil catch can. Well, does it? Is it normal?

Moreover, does it have anything to do with using low octane?

Mine does it too and I don't have a catch can, it might be something for us to check out.
