How do you know how to replace the cams? I can't find anything on how to do it and I want to do mine myself.

I did mine the same way that you're doing. Once you get the cam bolt lose, also tie a rope onto the cam gear and when you pull the cam gear out, tie it some where keeping the belt nice and tight with no slacks. Hope this makes sense. You don't need to mess with the tensioner. Do the same when you get the other side of.

I'm wondering why this question keeps getting asked. Not trying to be @ss or anything, but comeon you just spent $500 or so on cams,$85 on heastuds, another $5 on assembly lube, $3 on RTV. Why not pop the extra $12 or whatever (OTCTools) for the tool????

Pardon an old man for getting excited, but I f u c k i n g love my AMS timing belt tensioner tool! Before I was removing the belt tensioner, and then re-compressing it in a vise. I've done countless cam installs with this tool... it rocks:

Timing Belt Tensioner Tool
My guys got sick of paying $60 for TB tensioner tools and having them break, so I did some work and got these pupies made. They are 4140 cr-mo pre-hard material CNC'ed in two length's. Short for aftermarket intake manifolds and long for EVO's and stock DSM intakes. I heat treated the tips so they don't wear out after repeated use. A little anti-seize on the threads will prevent thread gailing.

$34.00

I agree too. If you don't have the proper tools or the experience then don't try it man. Installing cams can be straightforward to the experienced, but can turn into a very expensive nightmare for the beginner. Whoever does cams without compressing the tensioner (with tool) should stay away from cars. Myself , I made my own tool that is driven with a 3/8" ratchet. Its basically a long threaded bolt that is of a high grade. Wait for the proper tool man

another option is a battery tie down rod, a 2g eclipse is the right size you just need to thread it a little bit more down the rod. it is essentially the same thing

I love the little tip and tricks. My "special tool" the timing belt tension tool just came in the mail today. I ordered it from Mac tools. Call the 1-800 number on thier web site. It was only $10.50 but as stated eairler 7-10 day to get it to me. So I went with the 2-day shipping for an extra $22.00 If you go to SPX/OTC/Miller it was like $41 for the tool.

After seeing the tool. If I had to do it again I would get the battery tie down rod of a 2g eclipse or go to the hardware store and make my own. 8mm X 1.25 and 8" long , and get something strong because of the "horror stories" of having a home made one snap off.
