cam intstall with out tensioner
on evomoto.com's cam install write up, on steps 12,13,14 there is a picture of the belt tensioner and how you can lock it with an allen wrench or a drill bit to take the tension of the belt.
My question is why do you need a special tool if by locking the tensioner you create slack on the belt? I mean once you install the cams and put the belt all you would have to do is unlock the belt tensioner right?

$45 from AMS???? Good god. I had sticker shock since miller tools wanted 10-15 to ship the $12 tool to me. I'll get mine from the local Snapon or Matco guy. I got the tensioner pulley tool from them and that thing is a hotrod! Nice cushioned handle and everything.
I had a tool from miller to put tension on the hydraulic tensioner, but it wouldn't fit on my dsm with the magnus intake manifold so I had to cut it shorter and reweld it. now it won't work on my evo... So, I tried to make make a new one out of a battery tie down bolt and a die (as mentioned earlier in this thread). I will caution anyone who does this to proceed with caution as it's a pretty crappy way to get things done and should only be used if absolutely necessary and for the love of God, throw the tool away after a single use. The material simply isn't hard enough to withstand repeated use and furthermore, the die rounds off the threads of the bolt too much. I was worried about extracting it and I even lubricated the threads before insertion with a little air tool oil.
We all know, having the right tools makes any job go smoother, so do yourselves a favor and take some of that money you saved on labor and get yourself the right gear!
