Unhappy Service Engine Soon light came on?

Hey,

Well, I have a service engine light that just came on in my 2003 Evo GSR. It has 20,400 miles on it and it previously had no problems. The previous owner installed a perrin test pipe with the c.e.l. fix and it works great, he had it on since 9000 miles. The other day I was racing an srt-4 on the highway for just a few minutes, on and off throttle. After about 10 min. the service engine light came on.

I have no idea what this could be because I just changed the oil about 2k miles ago. I having suspision that the c.e.l. fix for the test pipe might have came loose? Also, is there a routine oil change or service light that comes on every so often installed by mitsu that reminds you do to maintanence?

I'm willing to take it to the dealer, but they might see the test pipe and say "take a hike". I was also thinking about going to autozone and getting the free check of what the service engine light is for.

Any clues?

Go to a performance shop to scan the cel code.

They may be able to erase it for you if its not anything harmful

Thanks,

I'm gonna run to autozone tonight and check out the codes. If I do get an error, how do I reset the codes?

-thanks,

You can ask autozone to scan it for you and to clear it also.

ok,

I went to autozone and they said it was code p01003, bad cylinder detonation. They said to get new spark plugs.

this doesnt make sense because the car has only 20k miles on it.

any thoughts?

replace the plugs first. If code still come back, do a compression test on all cylinders and go from there.

Ok,

This is weird but when I was driving home after work I decided to step on it and take the car almost to redline from 1,2,3. This for some reason got rid of the CEL. Can someone explain to me what happened there??

-thanks,

Ok, the CEL just came on again yesterday for no reason, does anyone know what the problems is here?

Should I buy new plugs, i only have 20k on the car...doesnt make sense? Did the perrin 02 sensor fix fail, does this happen? Or, am i running too rich?

i do believe after so many "good cycles" the computer will turn the light off on its own - only if all is good.
personally, I would replace the plugs first. get on it good to see if the light comes on. if it doesn't, you know that was the problem. My light came on at about 17k, P0300, I replaced the plugs- no problem since and now I am at 27k

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.
Our cars run rich, this shortens the life of the plugs. I replace my plugs every 15k-20k. 1 because its easy, 2 keeps things fresh.

Go have the code read again, if its the bad cyl then its a plug. If its the rear 02 then go from there. Sometimes the 02 fix (elec or mech) doesnt work and will throw the code.
