You should be only lining up the inner timing marks on the cams, right? I have never seen or heard of this "half tooth off" that you are all talking about. Care to explain?

I have never heard or seem it before either. When you try to lign up all four timing marks either the intake or exhaust cam is a 1/2 tooth off. If it was a hole tooth of I would just move it one way or the other to fix it. You use all 4 marks that is why they are there, and all the writeups show using a ruler to line all 4 up. Are the same sprockets different could the be swapped that is all I can think of.

Give me 5 minute and I will have an answer for you. I want to look at the procedure in the DSM manual and compare it to the Evo procedure.

Timzcat,

The EVO and a DSM are the same except the timing marks on the evo cam gears on the evo are a PITA to line up while maintaining it in timing. The DSM is easy compared to the evo to line up.

I have the original service manual pages for you with the right procedure. PM me an email address and I will send it to you. It's too big to attach here.

This will get the marks as close as you will get them. The exhaust will be off by a little bit, though.

Actually the procedure is a little different. I think the Evo is a total PITA. I do like the mark on the top cover though and not the 2 lines on the gears.
