So you guys think poor manufacturing over using the incorrect clutch for my application. It was a stage 1 clutch. Won't that make a difference?

This kind of failure happens from too much torsional shock (launching) or from misalignment (not having engine dowels in place). I assume you have the dowels in place, but check anyway.
Clutch Masters chose to use a smaller size center from Exedy rather than the larger one we use. Honestly, when the EVO first came out, there were no parts available so they probably started using this disc just because they could get it. The larger one is going to be heavier, but I have yet to see one do this. I have heard that CM has changed to the larger one but I don't know for sure. I have also heard they have pretty good customer service. Give them a call so they can help you out.
