The 5 speed has had its share of problems as far as bad synchros and faulty transfer cases. the tc problems were found and fixed mostly in 03s but drivers with 05s are still reporting grinding and faulty engagment associated with worn gears and synchros. The 5 speed is built by Mitsu.
The MR trans is better set up gear ratio wise for tracking. I have not heard many complaints about the MR trans. This may be because there are fewer MRs and even fewer members with MRs. But the MR trans is also not built by Mitsu. I had a GSR, but i have driven an MR and RS on the track. The track is definitely where the MR belongs and shines. The MR trans better handles the low end torque associated with pulling out of turns at the track. It also has teflon coated shifter cables that shift amazingly.
Agree with the above. If your going to roadrace or autox, it's possible the gear ratios are better with the 6sp. I have to question if it's worth the cost to upgrade vs the benifit. finding a crashed MR is going to be HARD, so expect to pay out the nose for a 6sp compared to rebuilding/replacing the 5sp.
A freshly rebuilt 5sp with corrrectly adjusted clutch should shift very well, so I can't see "shift quality" being enough of a reason to swap.
Granted, Im a dragracer, Im biased to 5sp. I want even taller gears than the 5sp has, would love to do 135mph in 4th on normal tires.
