What boost pressure requires head stud upgrade?

At what PSI should one consider head stud upgrade? I'm referring to the steady peak PSI achieved in a 3rd gear pull.

I ain't changing mine until my head comes off for porting. That means she will see 21-30psi depending on octane.

Boost has nothing to do with it. It has to do with cylinder pressure which is MUCH higher than boost pressure.

I wouldn't do studs unless I was building a race car, installing cams, or adding a larger turbo kit. A proper tune will keep the car in good shape

I think people actually use to install arp headstuds on oldschool dsm's because they used a paper type headgasket and were notorious for blowing them..Evo's on the other hand, come with a metal gasket..So I think they are a little harder to blow..

not completly true the headgasket would blow in the dsm because the head studs would stretch just like they can in the evo

Actually all headstuds. stretch..that is why in most service manuals it says when you pull the head buy new headstuds...and I have driven a turbo car for past 3yrs removed and reinstalled head numerous times using stock headbolts over and over..never had an issue with headgasket..(honda) by the way which uses metal headgasket..on the other hand I have a friend that has a gen 1 and headgasket use to blow all the time..he found an hks metal headgasket same exact setup, and has been using it for about 1 and 1/2 yrs not one blow headgasket..Has anyone here had any headgasket issues on their evo? just wondering because I think it uses a metal headgasket, but not really sure never pulled my head yet..

I thought the Evo came with headbolts? Anyway, ARP headstuds are cheap insurance.

Maybe your friend didnt install them right. The dsm foam gasket is deffially a weak part of the motor, but the studs were the main problem. When i had my dsm i used arp"s and a oem mitsu metal gasket, but i know plenty of people who used the stock gasket with arp"s with no problems. Also the evo does use a metal gasket

Is 15psi compressed 8.8 times atmospheric pressure not lower than 20psi compressed 8.8 times atmospheric pressure? In which case the cyl. pressure would depend on boost. I think what you meant to say as long as you aren't detonating. In which case the pressure wave of the pre-ign. meets w/ the pressure wave of the proper ign. point causing a big spike in cyl. pressure which is when headgaskets are prone to failure.

Im running 32psi and making about 500-510whp on the stock headbolts and stock headgasket.

I suggest you not worry about it untill you blow a headgasket. Changing them now can be seen as either:
A: Cheap insurance
B: $95 down the tube along with disturbing your good hg seal and CAUSING it to blow.
