Help! Is my timing off ?????

I need to know whether my timing is off. Can anyone confirm whether this is okay or not?

Below is the picture of the cam gears and the tick mark. Tick mark is about half way between the third and fourth line.

Thanks.

okay , first off.......tell me how that happened? did you remove the timing belt? What that mark is there for is to tell you exactly where to position it when you remove and replace it when inspecting. what's going on with your car? bad idle? loping? roaming rpms? you have to let me know so that I can give you an educated guess.

Bro - its sure hard to tell fomr those photos

I look at it with some real bright flashlights on my own car

Also the marks up top - its important to line them up right from the side

Finally - dont trust the plastic marks down low - stick a screw drive in cyl # 1 and use that to find TDC more accurately

I did not move the timing belt. 272/272 cams were done last year and car ran fine and was running strong.

During cold start-up at idle the rpm fluctuates and the needle on my boost gauge fluctuates as well. I've done a boost leak check and seemed to be okay. The car didn't seem to have power and pull like it use to so I decided to take the cam gear cover off and look at the timing.

I was dyno at BR last month. Mod is BRS4 with methanol and my TQ was 302 which seemed kinda low for an alky car but oh well.

THanks man. NOt sure what you mean by sticking a scre drive into cly 1.

I'll try to align the mark on top better and take better picture of the plastic tick.

He means to pull the #1 plug out and stick a long screwdriver down in the hooe to see if it istrull TDC. Not very scientific but, I guess it works. A dial indicator with a really long arm would be ideal but, most people don't have access to things like that.

I think thats a sound idea sticking someting long down the cylinder with the spark plug out. Finding TDC is a science and you have to confirm it is TDC. I suggest looking into the manual and re-align those cams. If you dont have one then u surely have friends who can help you no? Or you can always head into mitsu and have them do it.

you turn the engine back and forth with the screw driver resting on top of the piston to see true tdc

I wrap a bit of tape on the tip to keep my psitons happy

Sorry for asking but how will I know if the engine is at TDC or not with the screw driver down cyc #1 ?

I rotate the cam gears slightly over and looks like the tick mark is on the last line now. All I need now is to verify whether this is correct.

Thanks for the help.

When you turn the motor with the screwdriver in place you will see the screwdriver go down and come back up. When it stops at the highest point thats tdc.

THanks so the upper marks aligning with the valve cover and looking at the tick below doesn't mean swat???

Like I said the upper marks are align and the tick is on the last line

Probaly say your off a tooth.
Really needed to make a note of where it was before the cams though cause that plastic cover isn't exact. front the factory it can show a couple of degrees before or couple after TDC on the cover. the factory is TDC though. Get a degree wheel and a piston stop to check properly.

Your timing looks dead nuts on the marks.

If you think you're not pulling as hard as before. Have it compression checked.

The CAMs were in a long time already and the car ran great . I'm guessing it may have jumped a tooth.

HOw's the mark on everyone else car lining up? I would think it should be about the same correct? The tick being on the fourth mark doesn't sound correct on my car.

So with the mark on the cam aling with the mark on the valve cover, the tick on the plastic should be on the last line? There are 4 lines there.

If so thanks for the confirmation.
