Some questions about my axles..piqs included

Well after doing a couple launches using the 2step on my aem....the last one didn't go so well as the tires didn't spin and the whole car seemed to hit really hard and then take off but started making these strange noises from the drive side front axle. After talking to some people the said i probably broke the front diff. So i started prepping to pull the t/c out and the front driver side axle inner cv boot strap had blown off and grease was everywhere. and needless to say the axle came out after i unbolted the strut from the knuckle. The pass. side inner strap had also come off...but the axle is still in.

HOw do i go about pulling the rest of the axle out of the trans. No matter what at this point i think i am going to pull the t/c at least and put in a lsd diff. Not sure if i am going to pull the trans yet. but like i said i am not real familiar with front drivetrains but I need to get the axles out of there.

Has this ever happend to anyone before....blowing the straps of the cv joints....i don't see what would cause this. I wonder if that was my only problem and causing my drivetrain noise.

Here are some piqs.
Driver side

Pass side

as you can do the install yourself i'd start with one part at a time and see what it is. as i said in my PM earlier it's surprising you blew your front diff as i've heard of TC and Tranny's going but not the front diff. replace this first. i don't know a whole lot of stuff about cars so i could be wrong.

Thats one of the symptoms of a dead front diff , the same thing happined to me . Look at Evodaves threads about his front cv joints .

Good luck

Wayne,

Get a big prybar and insert it between the tc case and the axle and give it a hit. Usually that will knock the circlip loose from the tc case and the axle itself. It is pretty tricky but it is very easy to get off. Also you can use a Big flathead and do the same thing.

This is the only way to remove the stubs. Use a very large pry bar!

BTW - I'm the one you met at Detroit Flexible - Call me at the shop if you need some help.

Evoglh - i do have the paper manuals, thanks though, i couldn't find how to remove them once they are apart already. ugh

i did by a slide hammer....but now that the axles came apart...i'm not sure there is a way i can use it without putting them back together.

I will try that Luis with the screwdriver method lol....have you ever heard of the clamps popping off the boots like that. Seems strange.

The slide hammer will not help you until you get the axle off. The slide hammer is used to remove the splines from the tc case and tranny. Yeah try it and let me know how it works out for you.

Used to happen a bunch on the Formula Ford race cars that I was involved with back in the day. Haven't seen that on a modern car without something bad happening first!

BTW - You broke the TC (but you know that by now)

/\ yeah, thats what TRE told me when i talked to him. When you say t/c do you mean the front diff in particular? I am kind of new to this....do you think my axles are fine...just need a new strap for the boot?

well after a couple hours in the garage tonight i got the rest of the cv axles out with the "prybar" method, and then used the slide hammer on the short axles....which worked so nice! Then i unbolted the t/c and and lower eng. mounts and got the t/c out.

Thanks for evoglh and coming by and giving a hand and moral support lol.

Going to try and get off work early tomorrow so i can drop off my t/c to TRE.
