Alky Users & Winter Weather ??

Hey Guys,

So I went out driving about an hour ago and before I got on the gas I went to test my SMC Alky Kit. I pushed the test button, the light comes on, the car semi-stumbles and the car resumes to normal. . . . . .but the spray light (orange one) didn't go off. The spray light didn't go off for about 15 seconds. I did NOT hear the pump going while my finger was off the button and the light was on nor did I feel the car taking on any Alky.

It did this to me 4-5 times while on the road. I did a quick boost jump to 22psi (normal boost is around 25psi) and the car felt normal but the light would still wait to go off (10-15 seconds).

I parked the car, let it sit for about 15 minutes, got back in the car and did some tests with the alky and the light goes off when I let the button out. Just like it has been for the past 2-3 months.

This is kinda freaking me out. I guess ultimately has anyone else seen this problem in the cold weather?? It's about 25 degrees out right now (farenheit if you were asking).

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

OK, here's my theory. Coming from a cold weather climate, I've seen many a frozen fuel line. Maybe the line or more likely the nozzle froze due to condensation. After you juiced it with some alky, it melted free and continued normal operation.

mndeerslayer - I do take the theory of condensation freezing as a possibility even though I don't want to think about the possibility of having water anywhere in my intercooler piping. But if it were frozen why would have the kit light acted as if it were spraying? You know, why would the light get stuck??

SlowCar - If I am reading your/chemical charts correctly it has to be -145 F for 100% Methanol to freeze??!! That makes me feel comfortable for the winter at least about the bottle freezing!!

Edit - Why does it increase in temp once at 100% (-145) as opposed to 90% (-230)??

I appreciate all of your guys' help!!

THANKS!!

Don't know what went on that day but all has been well since.

I have talked with Steve at SMC (who is great by the way) and has just told me to be precautious with it. I will test constantly but the car seems fine.

Will keep everyone posted if it happens again.

I highly suggest a direct ground to the battery. I was having some strange problems as well and this helped.

04 rs - has it happened more than once??

Mine has only done it once. I am 99.9% sure my grounds are solid grounds. I am using an existing ground on the inside of the car and the ground for the bottle is directly on the chassis. I am going to wait and see if it happens again before I go and start changing things.
