Want to shut your whining Walbro up?
Want to shut your whining Walbro up?
Well, this may work for some of you, it may not for others. But it did work for me. I would also hazard a guess that if your Walbro has been noisy from day one that this might not be the answer, but anyway...
One day a few weeks ago my Walbro fuel pump just became loud, it had never been a problem before, but when I would be at a light or idleing, it would just scream. Once under way it was not so bad. My hypothosis was that the pump was stuck in the "high speed" mode and that it was not switching back over to the low speed once the fuel flow demand had gone down. So I started to look for the reason that it would just do this out of the blue, and I found it.
Under the intake manifold is a brace which connects the block to the manifold. There is a solenoid mounted to this brace on the passenger side sitting pretty close to the dipstick. Three vacuum lines go to the solenoid along with an electrical connection, two vacuum lines come off of the bottom (I did not look to see where they went) and one comes off of the solenoid on the passenger side, it kind of points at the alternator. This particular line goes to the top of the throttle body, it is the middle line on the top of the TB I believe. Anyway, mine was disconnected from the solenoid. When I re-connected it my "stuck on high" fuel pump became unstuck, and started to opperate normally once again. I do not know the name of this solenoid, but it must have something to do with picking up manifold pressure to know when to kick the fuel pump into high gear.
Like I said, this may not be everyones problem, but for those of you who had a well behaved Walbro that just suddenly became loud, you might want to check on all of the vacuum lines that come off of this solenoid, if not the solenoid itself. Otherwise you might end up buying another pump just to experience the same thing again...

He is talking about I assume the fuel pressure solenoid. I think its only use is to raise the fuel pressure when the motor is cold. IF the line gets disconnected it is horrible.. it means the fuel pressure will not go up with the boost (Making it run very lean at high boost) and also means the pressure will be higher at idle (Or when in vacuum).

It is loud but, when you have the stereo on or even a window cracked you cant hear it. On my old eclipse I had the rear seats out and that thing was obnoxious. People would get in and look all around and say what the hell is that???

like how trinydex described what happens when fuel pressure doesnt go up with the boost? i hope it doesn't cause misfiring..
great post..thanks!
