Turbo flatter, tricky problem

What you guys think the reason for all this??

I just got a WR turbo installed with 18lb Wastegate (14lb is on stock turbos) and AEM EMS. Now when I floor it it, it starts flattering the worst in 5th gear about 18 PSI and I cant drive like that, its crazy. Also with 18PSI wastegate it overboost regardless of my HKS EVC V settings (even when its of). I checked all the hoses for corect hook up and pressure tested the system for upto 40PSI and its all good.

Today I swaped my 18lb wastegate with stock 14lb and the issue of overboosting has almost gone, but it still flatters/chatter (sounds like BOV opening rapidly)

PS (Had a tune from AL last week for EMS) flattering was before the tune as well as after.
Is there anything that AEM EMS needs to be tuned for?? or some hardware issues???

Can anyone give me any advise as this is a tricky problem.

put the 18lb wastegate actuator back in and check your MAF to make sure it is plugged in all the way unless you eliminated the MAF. you shouldnt be getting any surging with this turbo-at all. sounds like just a software issue with the EMS. did you have any problems before the turbo install?? this turbo will overboost rather quickly because of the design. it spools a little faster with the better wastegate that is why your overboosting has gone away. you are wasting valuable exhaust gasses that you can use......hence the reason for the new WG. did you check the pretension also on the WG?? go to www.forcedperformance.com for a quick check of the pretension it should have. good luck.

i already answered your PM - its boost surge - all you need to do is shift down to avoid that condition

Consult with the company who sold you the turbo

regards

Thanks Al. Cant down shift as it happens allmost all the time (especially 5th gear -not drivable). I dont think its a turbo, most likely wiring or vac hosses issue. If anyone have any reasonable ideas, please share.

When I drove the car is was clearly garden varoety compressor surge

Many turbos do that

The solution is to usually shift down so you are running in a higher rpms level

If noone but me experiencing this problem with this turbo, then i want to look elsewhere and find the solution as I dont spend money for turbo that would not work.

Does your WR have the 9.8 or 10.5 hot side?

I tuned abnother WR turbo in Peoria IL last week which exhibited the same conditions as yours

1 - Boost creep

2 - Compressor surge

I think the solution may lay in the adjustment of the wastegate actuator arm - at least it can make the condition better

I second that, check the wastegate arm. Start with 0 preload and go from there. Only other possible option, is to loosen up the bov.

I'm not sure why you're trying to run 18psi in 5th gear at low rpms. But just like Al and the others have said it's compressor surge. Yes the WR will do that in 5th gear. Just down shift and go on your merry way.

Yes I have a WR and yes it surges. I was one of the first to post this back in Aug.

The turbo works fine. When I had the stock turbo, I could get that to surge even worse then the WR.

My stock 03' turbo did not surge at any RPM. This thing now is crazy, I swaped BOV to make sure its not the cause and it is not. It doesnt matter if I am running 120MPH and then shift in 5th gear, It'll do the same as if I am running 60mph and shift in 5th.

With my stock 9.8 hotside turbo I did not had any issues like that. If all of them do that then I'd rather have my sotck back on and live happily everafter.

But bro - you no longer have a stock 03 turbo - - now you have a high performance turbo

if its not working well call Robert at forced performnace he is an expert on turbos and will help you

Your stock turbo may have been less comprssor surge but its also a LOT slower than your car was
