Dyno tuned after cam / gears install 33whp gain!

I retuned my car today on the dyno after putting cams and cam gears in today. I gained 33 WHP!

Keep in mind this is a very low reading mustang dyno (much like buschurs):

Well, I gave myself the goal of making 300whp or more on the gruppe-s dyno on the stock turbo with a safe AFR on 91 octane and today I did it!

303.1whp
270.2wtq

11.0 AFR to 11.2 AFR @ 6800rpm +
91 octane cali pisswater

Here are the dyno charts:

Mods:
05 Evo MR
HKS 272/272 cams
HKS cam gears +1/-1
720cc injectors
Fuel Pump
MBC set at 1.5bar, holds 1.3 up top
MR bov
Turboback
ECU Plus piggyback
91 octane cali pisswater

It took about 2+ hours and around 16 dyno pulls of me tuning it and fiddling with cam gear settings. I did a best of 294whp and 265wtq with the gears set at 0/0. As you can see, messing with the cam gears can give you some great curves and numbers! My horsepower increased 30whp from when I had stock cams!

I wish my peak torque was stronger but I think one of the reasons is I wasn't spiking to 1.6bar on the dyno like I do on the street this time for some reason. The actual torque curve stays on SO much longer now then stock. Feels amazing. I'll be continuing to refine this tune on the street to try to get the torque up a bit. I was too tired by the end to try and mess with the torque more.

here is an overlay of my ECU + dyno pull with stock cams and my dyno pull with 272s, look at that hp and trq gain from the midrange on up!

Impressive! Congrats on the numbers.

Plenty of posts exist on evom about the gains when installing cams, but few exist about cam gear tuning. What where your final cam gear gains? Based on what you've stated, you gained 9 whp and 5 ft. lbs. from the gears alone. Do you mind sharing what your final cam gear settings were?

We spent alot of time messing with the cam gears. First was -4/-1 and then -2/-2 will no luck. The final setting was +1/-1 with ~9whp and ~5tq gain with a much better looking curve.

For those of you that thinks cam gears doesn't work....we have proved that it does work today.

Thanks,
Tom

I've always been a fan of cam gears. It's nice to see someone besides Vishnu say they have worth. My current settings are -2/-2, I'll try the +1/-1 next dyno session and see if I can duplicate your results. Great thread!

I'm working on it. We had to take out a bunch of timing because I was running too much and knocking so I think that hurt my tq but we'll see what I can do.

Mission 1 accomplished, Mission 2, more trq.

also, on your boost taper... do you think that you have a boost leak or do you think that's more a nature of the cams outflowing the turbo?

mine does the same thing, and im debating on if i should put anymore effort into correcting it if its not really a problem and just how the nature of the beast is.

Hey this is off topic. i was at a car meet tonight and a guy who was there was claiming 330WHP on a stock STi VF39 turbo on your dyno. is this true? he was in a 04' blue STi with a carbon fiber hood and gold rota tarmac 2's. i just wanted to know because i thought he was BS'ing. thanks. Brett

Hi,

I have never seen a stock VF39 doing 330whp on our dyno. Thats in the GT30 range and VF39 is way smaller. The max vf39 whp is around 270-280ish.

very nice, 300 was my goal, and now 400 is my goal. Hopefully in exactly one month and a day from today, that will be a realization....

Just want to let you guys know that 300whp is a magical number on our dyno w/ 91 octane. For example, WR running 11.7 AFR (work's tune) made only ~280 whp on our dyno.

Thanks,
Tom

You're referring to a Dynojet, though...
