Bad vibration!!

Ok well to start, my whole engine make horrible vibrations past 3k rpms. It makes a load noise kind of like grinding but not quite as harsh.... I took my car to MITS and they said they could not figure out what it was, and they told me they could not work on it because of all the mods.... They charged me $180 to tell me they could not help... Do you guys have any Idea's

need more info to rule things out. are you sure it is rpm dependent? is this when you are driving or sitting still? any recent work done to the car such as a timing belt job? good luck.

just did a compression test and it was 135psi across all 4, keep in mind the motor was not really warmed up... But what would cause that low of compression #'s through all 4 cylinder's?

You answered your own question. Your timing is screwed up. Possibility if timing screwed up, you have low compression, you could also misalign the balance shaft.

the balance shafts don't just become out of phase all of the sudden.

Here are my thoughts:
Since it is rpm related, I am curious if it is flywheel or clutch related. Those are the items that cause the most primary vibration. What flywheel are you using? Could the flywheel be coming loose. If so, the vibration might get better as you push on the clutch pedal. It is really hard to get the pressure plate to come apart and cause vibration, but maybe the disc is coming apart? Have you had any noticable difference in pedal feel? Does it happen whether or not the clutch is engaged or disengaged? In other words, if you have the car in gear and clutch pedal down (disengaged clutch) does it still vibrate? If so then it is probably not the disc, since the disc is not spinning at that time. You also said "loud noise" which makes me think release bearing problem, but generally vibration doesn't accompany a release bearing problem. Does it feel rough like a bad bearing or does it shake like a balance problem? I hope you figure it out!

I had the same problem a few days ago. My vibration was load oriented (appx 3000-4000rpms) , basically when the car would catch more than about 10 lbs of boost and it felt internal also. Check your rear motor mount bolt. My rear motor mount bolt worked itself loose and completely came out so when the car would get under a load and exhibit torque the driveshaft would become unaligned and cause a great deal of vibration. I hope this info helps.

By the way.........before I diagnosed the problem I called my mitsu tech and he said that it was probably balance shaft oriented, but if the timing belt has not been recently removed (ie. cam shaft install) then the balance shaft should not be out of whack.
