Catch can goop on breather side

Hi all,

I have two DIY Campbell-Haufield catch cans in my 03 Evo 8, one on the ventilation side, and one on the breather side. Generally, the PCV side gets more oil. Lately, the breather side has been getting more than before (not as much as PCV side), but what concerns me is that it is a disgusting milky looking "goop". I believe that's the technical term for it, heh.

It looks like mostly oil on the ventilation side, but the breather side looks like it has water or coolant mixed in? I'm not low on coolant, and the dipstick doesn't seem to show any coolant. Is this just moisture mixing with the oil on the breather side? Is it "normal"?

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,

I had this same setup but I wasn't catching ANY oil from the breather side at all, so I just took it off. I catch alot of oil through the PVC line tho, take a picture of this "goop" perhaps? Maybe you've got a leak somewhere or somthing.

Hi,

I'll see if any more is in there and post up a pic. It is brownish and "milky". It looks how I've heard coolant mixed with oil described. Smells foul too. If it's coolant, how is it getting in there? Headgasket issue? I hope not and coolant isn't low and oil under valvecover and on dipstick look ok.

Forgot to mention, most of the time, there is barely anything on the breather side. The last couple of times, there is about as much as the PCV side, but it's this weird goop as described...

Thanks,

Products of combustion are CO2 and H2O. You're getting some blowby past the piston rings, H2O vapor is getting into the crankcase, and the cooler weather is condensing the water vapor in your catch can. The resulting milky looking color is a water/oil mix. Depending on how much you are getting, int's probably nothing, it's normal to get some.

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense. I kind of panicked that something was wrong with the headgasket or the like, and was just looking for some reassurance that it was ok. Car runs well and I hope to keep it as my daily driver for a long time, heh.

Take care,
