Question The "Real Truth About Intakes" ?

Looking for real experiences with ARC, HKS , K&N System etc. I have read mostly negative things about aftermarket intakes and I simply have a Works drop in right now. It seems like there are so many out there now I was just wondering if anyone has recent experience testing/driving different models. Some appear to be well designed while others look like hot air suction devices.

Yes I have searched. Just looking for fresh perspectives.

Talk to Al. He has tested just about every intake out there.

However, on a personal note I have the Injen intake and ic pipe and I like it.

Al will probably either say drop in K&N, Injen, or BR

I would suggest that you do a search on my "case study" threads - you can see many dyno sheets of various intakes with differnet mod combos

I personally prefer the BR, HKS or Injen units

A good intake is worth 8 - 12 whp gains with a proper retune

key words..."with a proper tune." imo, the drop in u have is good. your money could be better spent elsewhere, mbc, safc, etc. i think throughout my searching, i have found more threads with intake probs, than benifits, without a tune that is.

Stick with the drop in air filter, you happen to have one of the best.
cold air is better then sucking hot air in and screwing up the mass air readings

I would recommend a panel filter if you weren't planning to get the car tune. However, we have seen Helix intake making 8-10 whp more than any panel filters after installation and retune. This is for a car thats tuned perfectly and then retuned after the intake mod.

Thanks,
Tom

I've been doing some digging up on intakes and had a quick question. Are these gains done on a dyno with the hoods up? If the car has the hood closed as to stimulate real driving conditions would the gains be nullifed?

I was a dyno day at Turbo Trix that Shiv was at tuning a couple of my friends cars, he recommends the stock intake. he said aftermarket intakes mess with the MAF readings and that the stock intake flows enough. I would have never thought about it until he said that and explained. just what Ive heard, and will keep in mind when I buy my evo

I would say great point. I know that if the snorkle/scoop is missing a clip it has caused problems, so with the hood open it could taint the results. I know Al has road tuned many cars, but then the numbers are on the butt dyno. lol

I've got the HKS RS, I ran it for awhile without a tune and had no idling problems. I got it tuned by TurboTrix and nothing but a smile.

For you guys who have the HKS intake, I wonder if you know how poor a job the HKS filter does at filtering out dust particles. A couple years back, I picked up an option magazine that did a filter shoot out. The Apexi, and K&N came out on top for good filtration, with the Blitz, then HKS being the most poor. While the Apex and HKS basically tied for making power.

I had an HKS intake on my 240sx, and sold it because I noticed that the inside of the intake pipe behind the filter had powdery dust accumulation. After changing to a true K&N kit, I didn't see the dust anymore.

Just a thought.

I agree.

Thats why I believe the HKS isn't a very good intake.

Its awful for filtration.
