We've got 280's in all of our shop cars. One went from 272's to 280's and there was a slight bump in upper rpm power, not too noticable loss in low end, and no other issues. The 05 with 280's has died out several times backing it into my garage. But we've gone from -3 to 0 to +3 on the cam gears without too much difference.

But I gotta say, if it's a daily driver, I'd go with 272's and call it a day.

so the 280s will have a much rougher idle than the 272s, but the 280s offer more power up top. I'm really leaning towards 280s.

it may be like 2-5 whp, above 7000 rpm only, that's it. If it's a daily driver, you'll spend more time at idle than you will above 7000 rpm. Just food for thought.

also, are adjustable gears needed for 280s?
I don't know if it matters but I ran 11.50's with ease on 264's and no gears.

if i went w/ 272s, would you still suggest adjustable cam gears? also did you guys upgrade head gaskets? i know our stock one is pretty good, just trying to do this the right way.

I think cam gears would be a good idea for either 272's or 280's, they would help a lot with idling...........

ok, so here's what i'm looking at, 272 i/e, crower valve springs and retainers, adjustable cam gears, new oem head gasket, and arp head studs.

well, i talked to mike @ turbo trix a while back on this, he told me you dont need cam gears but he recommended to get them. valve train can also remain stock. when i do cams im changing mine no matter what i put in, also gonna get the cam gears. they said that they have been getting 40-50whp out of zex 280+ depending on other mods and no real extensive tuning, so the capabilty is higher esp. the more mods you have.

a lot of people have installed the ARP studs without replacing the head gasket. Didn't know if you were aware of that, so I thought I'd share it.

Here is my ecu plus dyno of stock cams vs 272/272's at +1/-1

I gained 33whp from the 272's and cam gears on a mustang dyno. 270whp with stock cams, 303whp with 272's and cam gears. All at a very safe for 91 octane 11.1 AFR
