Cam gear bolt stripped and stuck. Help?
I'm in the process of putting my cams in with the help of a few buddies. We were trying to get the Stock cam gear bolts off, but wound up stripping one of the bolts and breaking a socket in the process. These damn things are TIGHT. I've never actualy seen what these bolts look like and was wondering if i can simply go to the hardware store and buy a new one, or do i need an OEM bolt from Mitsu once we finally get these bolts out? Can anyone post a quality link to a cam install as well? I did a quick search, but for some reason, the intall write up i was using, doesn't show up anymore?
I used a ghetto "breaker bar" when I did mine. Tool a jack handle apart and inserted it over the socket wrench to break loose the cam gear bolt. Had my buddy hold an adjustable wrench on the cam took keep them in place (a 123 simultaneous pull/push job)...
Really, an OEM bolt? Crap.. I don't have a mitsu dealer with in 400 miles of me. Can anyone tell me if i can use another bolt from another dealer maybe, or if it's ok to try a quality hardware store bolt?
you don't need an OEM bolt, you can get a decent bolt at a hardware store that will hold fine. The torque values on the cam bolts isn't that great, and just about any stainless bolt will do just fine. Ask the guys at the hardware store, tell them the bolt size you need, and the torque it needs to hold and they should be able to get a proper bolt for you.
Here's a decent link to get you started, but if you get a grade 8 bolt, you really can't go wrong.

added: you'll need to convert from standard to metric.... and these charts are for steel bolts, stainless are capable of much higher values, I just don't have a link handy for stainless.

Wow, thanks alot DUBBLEUGLY01. That's very helpful. As far as torgue goes, i don't think the write up i've been following mentioned anything about torguing those bolts. Besides, they seem like they're cemented on at the moment and I doubt i'll be able to get these to ever be that tight again. I mean, these suckers are stuck on GOOD!

Call the nearest auto parts store(pepboys, autozone, etc) and ask them to special order them for you. Or you can go to www.mitsubishiparts.com and call their contact # and ask for them. That almost happened to me as well, but I stopped and went to an autoshop, they let me use an impact gun on those bad boys!

SS bolt generally speaking is a very weak bolt they are normally less than grade 5. as steve p said i wouldnt use any thing less than and 8 a 10.9 would be best good luck finding a bolt that large and with that fine of a pitch. youd have to go to a fastner house
