How much boost can the car handle?
The car can handle as much boost as long as you have a good tune.
My eclipse was running 28psi daily with stock head, stock head studs, and stock bottom end. BTW it was a 7bolt also.

22 is the edge for the stock turbo accoding to the DSM sages that I know who know this turbo and understand all the math and flow rates, I'm not one of them.
you can run it higher but you will wear it out that much faster. That's not an opinion, it's a fact that more than a few on this sight simply choose to ignore.
.... there are plenty of guys that run higher, which is ok too, if you plan on replacing the turbo after a year or two any way. it's rolling the dice at best. Maybe their comfort level is different. One tuner told me that he runs Evo's at 26 all the time, I did some homework and decided that's way too edgy for me.
the 05's have a different turbo that is set higher than the 19 factory level on the 03/04, so keep that in mind.
I checked but didn't see where you mentioned if it was new or used. Sorry if I missed that.
You also have the internals to consider before you get things too high.

Search IS your friend, BUT the bad part about that is that not all misinformation is removed and you can get old incorrect info as well, so I really don't mind seeing questions revisted from time to time.
I usually just ignore the posts that I fine boring or anoying.

Searching with one word queries is pure laziness. How hard is it to try a little harder with multiple word combinations while specifycing "threads containing this word" with "topics posted with this word" or even looking for a specific username who has posted something relative to your question? You just tried once, didn't find what you wanted, and then used that as an excuse to not follow the posted rules and post a basic question.
Hey, nirvevo, who are these DSM sages that say 22psi is the edge for the 16g6? 22-23psi was about the limit on my old small 16g in 1998, but this is a much larger, more efficient turbo that can go to 25psi without trouble, as long as the proper octane is used. I do 21-22psi daily, then 24-25psi on race gas. I would think we have enough DSM sages here that if 22psi was really the edge for this turbo, then it would be mentioned quite often. Most of us came from DSMs to begin with. I consider Jeff Hill (TurboTrix) and Dave Buschur to be DSM sages if there ever was one...

OT...You might consider regapping your plug to a slightly smaller gap...you may have it gapped just a tad too far apart and the higher boost is "blowing" out the spark...not that that is the definaite answer, but just something to look at during your process of elimination...

You might be right, maybe he was talking about the old 16G, but I was pretty sure the guy was aware of the Evo's turbo and it's capabilities. As far as the sages, they are just long-timers in a local club that kind of lead the pack around here. He was one of the "proven" (not PRUVEN :-) resouces, locally. Just wanted to make sure people knew I wasn't quoting some hack.
I was also DEFINITELY talking about pump gas 91-93, I should have brought that up to the guy who started the thread, glad you have. Big important point.

It should be mentioned that where I'm at (5280 above SL) when the boost guage reads 22, it's actually working as hard as sea level cars pushing somewhere around 23 or 24, because of the altitude and difference in relative air pressure.
(I didn't want to get in to all of that altitude stuff going in the reply, and remembered "22" as being the magic number, so in fact my source may have been acounting for that difference with the 22 recommendation.)
I'll check around again, that's something I love to be wrong about ;-) although I'm still at MY limit, or at least very close.

From what I have herd after 22 pounds of boost on the stock turbo you start to lose the efficiency of the turbo. Another words it starts to taper off more the closer you get to red line. You can run higher that 22 but it will taper off faster because the stock turbo can't hold that much boost long enough. I might be wrong, so don't hold me to it.
