curb weight vs gross weight

I know the curb weight of the car is listed at 3240 but the gross weight is 4200. WHats the difference where do they get this extra 1000 pounds? Is the gross weight including a full car load of 5 people and a full trunk? IT also gives weights of the front axle and rear axle with only a 300 pound difference which leads me to believe that the weight distribution is around 52/48 % is this right? I got a silver evo in the pensacola florida area

Gross weight is the most the car is supposed to carry.

Curb weight is the car with full fluids (gas, coolant, etc). i.e. how much it would weight parked at the curb of your driveway.
