280's vs 272 race results...

Me and my friend decided to race from a roll from 3rd gear at 3k rpm up to 120mph I believe....not sure but we cutoff right at the end of 4th going into 5th. BTW this was done on a closed race track. At first I jump ahead about 1 car and stayed there up to 4th gear...by the end of 4th gear at 6k rpm he already caught up and was next to me but had to shut down because of no more road left. If we would of went into 5th gear I personally think he would slowly walk me..I felt my car would of either lost of be dead even. If you look at my mods compared to his you will see how strong those 280 cams are. BTW im running alky and higher boost We ran 3 times and the results were the same. We both dont know what our cam gear timing is so dont ask... lol It can be the tune or whatever reason it is I dont care... im just letting you guys know the results between these 2 cars My cams felt like it was dying at around 6k rpm but his 280's were pulling hard up to 8k rpm.

My mods: HKS 272, HKS cam gears, HKS upper intake pipe, Greddy Rspec FMIC, Ferrea 1mm oversized racing valve with 3 angle valve job, Crower valve spring & retainers, ported stock intake manifold, head studs, alky injection, Apex intake, Power FC and TBE...im running 26psi... AFR's 11.3 at WOT

Friends Mods: HKS 280's, HKS cam gears, Ralliart upper and lower intake pipe, stock fmic, ARC intake, TBE and HKS Vpro at 22psi. AFR unknown...doesnt have wideband.

When I bought my cams I wanted 280's but the place was out of stock so I ended up with 272's because my friend was leaving the country and I wanted him to bring the cams back. Do regret that I dont have 280's so lets hope my GT35R will make up for that

I thought the 280's would be too much for the stock turbo

yes both have stock turbos. I think right where the stock turbo dies out at around 6k rpm...the 280's kick in

I been in his car once as a passenger and that thing pulls hard...cant really feel any lag or loss of power down low when we were going from stop light to stop light.

280's are nice cams and do make 10-15whp more then 272's, but without some pretty great tuning they do idle worse. No stalling usually, but with the A/C the rpm's do tend to hunt a little more.

Remember 3 years ago there were no 280 cams and 4g63's in DSM's etc were still putting out 600+whp, so 280's aren't magic, but will give you slightly more top end.

An effective 272 vs 280 cam comparison will involve the same car, conditions, parameters, everything, except the cams

Little continuity between the title and your thread, but surprising results nonetheless. I think the real difference between the two cars performance is the tuning and possibly HS - if your running 9.8 and he has 10.5 then that would make a difference.

I wouldn't go out and replace your 272s wt 280s just because of this, I would consider HS if decide to kee turbo stock

Thanks for posting the test though, usefull info.

I agree with the above statement.

The biggest difference I see is the head work you have. Head and cams work together to increase airflow. You may in a sense have 290 cams now because of the possible loss of port velocity. My bet is 280s would work poorly with your setup. What you probably need is 264s. very little info on the boards on this subject. As a matter of fact I have not seen it discussed.

had a firend here that had some headwork done on his head. The head worked unbelievably well with stock cams. When the crower 414 cams were installed the car turned into a pig. Fought tuning the car for months. Then one day he calls up and says his car is running fantastic. He had reinstalled the stock cams.

I have no way of knowing for sure if this is what is adversly affecting your performance. I have not seen your headwork. I am just giving you a possible reason for your loss. Your a/f is good on alky and at 26psi boost you should be killing the 280car at 22 psi.

Boost leak? You'd lose power up top easily... do a thorough test.

my car runs good with alky and the power is there. If I have boost leak im sure the outcome of the race would be much different.
