It's an 03' and it blew with 29K miles, but how many miles did it have on it when you purchased it?

What mods did it already have??...sorry if you covered this already.

It had 14,530 on it......... it had a boost controller on there which was removed because all the vacuum lines were mixed up, no cat, & a non-stock clutch.

damn that sucks.............my order was front diff, tranny & engine. I 'm not doing a stroker because... you really don't need it.

I hate to tell you this, but I believe your used EVO was not bad when you got it.... If the car ran well for 15K miles (quite a while) and suddenly developed problems when it got cold, it means that most likely your AEM EMS tune was off or some part of your EMS or associated sensors failed to do the job. I have broken engines in the past in a manner very similar to what you describe. I was definitely a case of running too lean in the cold days of winter. The car ran great in ths summer, but when it gets cold, your air is much denser and you'll run very lean. This will cause knock, which will do the damage you see..... Unless the tuning is done spot on for all possible conditions, you will most likely blow your next engine as well.

I had the AEM EMS and a whole bunch of associated mods done to my previous '03 EVO and it was a disaster. I eventually removed the EMS and a whole bunch of stuff to get it running half way right. Any time you get a stand alone or even a piggyback, it needs to be retuned when the temps change from winter to summer and viseversa. That's the reason the stock EVO computer can be reflashed or tuned for more power. The OEM settings are safe for practically all conditions except really low octane fuel.... I would not be surprised that even reflashes have an element of danger to them, particularly if they are done for maximum power during hot weather.... I can easily see how such a "tuned" ecu would allow lean running conditions = knock, in the cold winter days.

As Torre says, it's not just the EVO but really, any car... There is no assurance that the used car you buy has not been misused and abused.... Still, I think that with todays cars it's easier to tell what condition the car is in. Biggest thing is to look for CELs or a history of them in the ECU. Of course, having a good mechanic look at the car or better yet, take it to a dyno and get a baseline run done. This should help you make sure that you get a nice car. Don't be afraid of a used EVO. You can get great buys on them and probably it would be no more abused than if you owned it from the start
