Check your oil level...

I just checked my oil level the other day and found that it was overfilled at the factory. It was above the max line by approximately the distance between the min and max line (if that makes any sense). Does anyone know how much that corresponds to? 1 qt? Since I've driven it for 400+ miles now, will it cause any adverse effects on the engine?

Oddly enough this happened to someone else too. Lemme see if I can dig up the thread.

EDIT: Here we are.

Nope, won't hurt it. It may rob a few horsepower though. You don't want the crankshaft spinning around in too much oil.
Your first thing to do for hp gain...remove some oil!!

I noticed this too today, but I had my car on ramps so it was tilted back some.
I changed the oil today and added back in 5 qts. 4.5 for engine, and .5 for filter and oil cooler.
My theory is that the oil cooler oil is draining out, accounting for some of the extra. As mentioned before though, its not too much to worry about.

That'll be my second thing for hp gain, since I already have a Type R sticker...

It's good to know that it won't do any damage though. I'm gonna make my dealer drain the excess out along with getting rid of the damn rattles in my dash and near the rear window.

Claudius,
how do you drain the oil cooler ? Does it drain by itself if you let enough time ?

Thanks

the cars come overfilled with oil because they burn oil when new. and to compensate for this burnt oil mitsubishi puts extra so we the customer dont have to address it.

I checked my car last night after reading this thread. The dipstick read a "perfect" fill with the oil coming up to the top notch. The car had been sitting in the garage for a few hours.

I use the same procedure as Claudius for oil changes. Fill it up, run the car (I've heard to go up to normal operating temp but I usually don't wait that long), let it sit for a few minutes, and check the level. If I need a little more I add it then. I'll re-check if I'm feeling extra paranoid.

sup yo. I am new here. My 03 Lancer came with a little more oil that spec, and the dealer told me the same thing- that new engines burn a little oil
