Very long post of thoughts from David Buschur.......
I have been thinking about some things. If you don't want to read some long crap then please stop now. Many of you like what I write, if that's you read on. Hell you might want to read on just to flame me at the end. Either way, here it goes...
Progress, innovation, being the first to market, being the best all of these things are what I strive for.
I don't sit back and wait for an idea (although sometimes I have seen one and said that's a good one, I'll improve it on it and make my own) to come along and then jump on it. I try to come up with something and build it. Sometimes it is 100% right off the bat, sometimes the idea works but can be improved on. Sometimes the improvement can be improved on and so can that one, etc., etc.
Take the Deluxe FMIC. I did not personally lay that one out. It did work well but alignment problems with the lower i/c pipe were common, the higher the mileage got on the cars the worse it was. Solution was two fold on this one. Solid urethane motor mounts, which we built and released. I also finally built a new one without a solid lower pipe. I now offer a low cost fix to the old deluxe FMIC kits, no it isn't free but it is the best I can do. For $200 you can send yours in, I'll modify it like our new ones and send back a new lower i/c pipe for your EVO8 or EVO9 turbo. New and improved.
The 20G is what actually got me thinking about all this stuff on my mind. The EVO8 20G worked, made good power over stock. It surged. I posted this surging information from day 1 all over the place. We attempted to warn every single customer that ordered one that they surged. Still some people claim to have not known (not many). I saw the EVO9 turbo and the larger compressor cover, I knew from the DSM days that the larger cover we used then caused no surging so figured it was the solution. Tried it, blah blah blah, it worked. New and improved.
IF I could design a product that was so freaking good that I only had to do it one time I would. I don't build something to just waste my time and money to improve it later.
I have a horrible cold right now. Why is this relavent? Well I took a shower and when I got out and toweled off (easy girls, easy!! haha) I grabbed my tooth brush and new tooth paste. Interesting, they improved my Crest! New right on the tube. It made me think of this entire topic. So then I grab my sexy deodorant, my wife bought me a new tube of Axe. What do you know?! IT is NEW too! Longer lasting DRY! WTF?! Well I needed some Nyquil and what do you know, no kidding it has NEW right on the front of it too. Then I look in the cabinet and see that my Benadryl is also NEW!!
It made me think of two things seeing this. Do some companies actually put NEW on a product just in hopes of selling more of it? I mean I am perfectly happy with my old Nyquil, Crest, Axe (especially the Axe, it makes my wife horneeee
and the Benadryl. Maybe it is a marketing ploy, I don't know, I didn't take marketing. For me it is to actually improve something I did, not to sell more of them or resell to an existing owner of the old one. Something else funny, with all that new stuff in my cabinet it never crossed my mind once to contact one of those companies and tell them I want my money back for the old product or to have them upgrade my old product for the NEW one.
That's about it on that......just some of my thoughts. Take em or leave em.
The other thing is the entire China market of parts. That is some crazy stuff. The craziest stuff is how many people or changing what they do and just giving up. Having their parts built there and then shipped here. It puts me in a bad spot, so before you bash me read all of it.
We are Americans. I was a union employee. I have my thoughts on unions and most of them don't work for other hard core union people. I am a hard worker from what I have seen a hard worker doesn't need a union to keep his job. The union in the steel mill where I worked helped the lazy good for nothing buttholes that should have been fired. I know all the good things unions did back in the day but the fact is today they protect worthless people. GM, Ford etc are paying people to NOT go to work, that is the Union strength. I don't agree with it. Bash me if you want. IF you don't work, you don't get paid. IF you aren't making money for a company YOU don't get paid.
I served in the US Army, am proud as hell of it. I'm a flag waiver and I'll yell at you if you talk during the National Anthem. I love Mitsubishi's and have made my living from them for about 17 years. I have also bought a 2 new Chevrolets in the last 4 years and a new Ford.
It never bothered me supporting Mitsubishi all these years and I got out of my way to do it, so does some of my other family members.
The cheap cheap cheap parts though, from what I understand are mostly coming from China. No polution laws, under paid, over worked people, no workers comp and such to deal with, these are some of the things I "hear" about how they stay cheap. The bad part is some of the quality is excellent. You all know I am selling the China built 02 housings. They kick butt.
I recently met with a company, VERY LARGE company. They told me to take my exhaust, ship it to China and have it built there. I asked, "Why?" This guy told me they did it with their exhausts because they couldn't compete on pricing anymore. They get an entire catback built and shipped here, in 304 SS for $80 each. Well my friends that is interesting. $80 for a catback, you know what, they didn't even bother to lower their prices, now the few sales they loose they don't care as the profit is so high it doesn't matter. That is a business mans way of thinking.
I am not a business man.
I thought about this. Then I thought about the price it really costs if I do this.
1. I won't need a welder anymore, so Trent is out of a job.
2. There is a shop that makes our awesome new hangers we are using on our exhausts. He use to supply some medical companies with similar type things. Well they took their business to China and this guy almost closed up. We use him partly to help him out, mostly because he makes a great part for us. If I switch to China I would guess he would close up.
3. Our mandrel bending company. While we aren't their largest company we do spend about $250,000 per year on bending with them. If we went to China with our exhausts they would not close, but I bet one guy would lose his job.
4. Our laser cut flanges. Again, another company does those for us here. They would not close but this company does a lot for us and we probably spend over $100,000 a year there. IF we switched I'd guess another job would be lost.
Look at the effects of just our small company out sourcing overseas for our exhausts. IT is real and has real effects on a lot of people.
I just can't do it. I thought about it and then when I thought of some of the guys not having a job, to me, it isn't worth the outcome.
I'll keep making our parts here and try to keep some guys working, feeding their families etc. When I can't make it, I'll out source it to wherever I have to but as a last resort.
That's about it. Thanks for reading.

I don't always agree with everything you say and some of your products but I respect you and your company greatly. Good post. I will be pming you in the future sometime as welll as I am planning a 48hr drive for diabetes and was thinking of coming from NY to your guys shop.
That was a great post David. I also feel the same way as you do about out sourcing all of the americans jobs to foreign countries to save a little money. It makes a huge impact on our economy and we wonder why so many americans are on unemployment and homeless.
Thank you, David, for my regeneration of patriotism in this country. Keep up the good work. Look at Edelbrock, They never outsourced and have become a thriving business of after market car parts. David, maybe you should start stamping your parts with "Made in the USA" badges like Edelbrock has.

Finally someone who is realistic and accountable. In an ironic twist UNIONS are responsible for the very thing you are talking about.

No the post was not to say I am going to outsource. It is the exact opposite of that. I will continue to build our parts in house and keep as many people employed as I can. My employees are my friends and family, it is important to me they have jobs and make a decent living.
Not sure what exactly the point of the post was. Just some things I was thinking about. I don't want to sell out at the cost of other people not having income just so I can personally make more. Forget that. It's not that important to me.

That was an excellent post. It is very hard to find people who consider the welfare of others and not just the bottom line. Personally, I am fed up with interacting with so many people who are looking for the "easy way out" at whatever expense. Dave you have earned my respect, not only as a innovator in the Mitsu world, but as a person.
Dave I agree with you. You are a model of what the American businessman USED to be. I wish more people were like you. As a matter of fact....you have inspired me to use your company exclusively for the next few Evo parts that I may need in the future.
Thanks for being a honest, hard workin, not full of ****, all around cool guy.

Dave where do you guys get your flanges cut? I am a laser tech at a company here in WI! I maybe able to get you a better price, if you are looking to change companys. Our metals department does alot of automotive jobs(laser welding rocker arms, etc.). Oh yea great post, you should think about writing a book!
