Problem with oil light

Has`anyone had any problems with their oil light lighting up once the rpm goes under 1000? I've checked my oil level and its perfectly fine. I'm not sure what the problem might be any ideas?

The light is more of an indication of your oil pressure. You might want to hook up a true pressure gauge and see where things are at. Too low and you could be looking at some internal trouble.

The oil light is supposed to come on when your RPMS get really low (around 300-400) because at this point your oil pressure is too low to be safe. The oil pressure in these cars runs linearly with engine speed (pretty much) so the higher the engine speed the higher the oil pressure. If it is coming on around 750-900 (at idle) I would be very worried. This could indicate a faulty oil pump, and your engine might not be getting the proper amount of oil pressure.

The light only comes on when the engine gets hot, but when the engine is warm it doesn't light up. So I'm not sure?

This is a bad sign. When you first start the engine up the oil pressure is usually very high because the oil is still thick. When the engine reaches it's operating temperature then the oil thins down and oil pressure drops, if it drops by too much (in the case of a faulty oil pump) the light will come on. Take your car back to the dealership and show them this. The oil light SHOULD NOT BE COMING ON, especially in a new car. Have you checked your oil level? I really hope you haven't already fried your block.

Nope haven't fried it yet. In the winter it doesn't light up, but during the summer it does when my oil temp is high. When I press on the gas it goes away. It only does it sometimes, but not all the time. Hopefully its not the oil pump because that would suck since the car is still new.

Have you taken it to the dealership yet? I wouldn't wait any longer on this type of problem. It might be that the oil pressure sensor (the sender) is defective and the pump (and your oil pressure) is OK. Either way, it is a very serious problem I cannot BELIEVE you didn't take the car to the dealership when you first noticed this problem. If the oil light ever comes on, usually it means its time for a new engine.

Yeah, light is for low oil pressure.

A little off topic,

My brother just bought a 97 Eclipse GST and when we were driving it home, the low oil pressure light came on. We pulled over and towed the car home. After, lookin at some DSM forums we learned that the low pressure light is not that great and comes on sometimes when the even DOESN'T have low pressure, usually when idelin or stop at a stoplight.. They recommend putting a real oil pressure gauge. We also learned that if the light is on, check to see if the head is getting oil by lookin in the oil cap and checkin if oil is sloshing around.
