15w-50 = 90psi at idle?

I put in some 15w-50 for my last oil change and noticed that my oil pressure is at 90 psi at idle.

Is that normal? Can it cause damage?

Was your engine up to full operating temps?

Nope.

I changed it yesterday, and it was at 90 psi while cruising.

I think I filled it up too high so I let some out today and now its at 90 psi at idle.

I'm not sure if its going to fall enough once its up to operating temp.

So Im alittle weary of driving any more until I know if that high of a pressure can cause damage.

From Shop Manual

5. Run the engine to warm it.
6. After the engine has warmed up, check that oil pressure is
within the standard value.
Standard value:
At idle: 29 kPa (4.2 psi) or more
At 3,500 r/min: 294 − 686 kPa (43 − 100 psi)

It does not give cold temps. That pressure does not seem abnormally high to me.

Check your factory service manual. Why would you put 50 weight in a car requiring 30 weight synthetic? Drain it and put the CORRECT ENGINE OIL IN.

That's pretty typical when the oil is cold. It should drop significantly however when the engine is up to operating temperature. Go for a 15 min. drive and you should see the drop in pressure to usually somewhere between 10-20 psi at idle.

I've used 20W-50 in my DSMs for 7+ years as well in customers cars, and never had an issue. During the winter I usually switch to 15W-40 for a little help on cold starts. I used mobile one 15W-50 in my evo without any problems. I wouldn't worry about it.

Why do people try to second guess the engineers? If the manual states to use a certain oil then do it.

Because most of the cars on here are not stock. I personally have noticed oil pressures being to low in the summer using 10-30w mobil one. So I switched to 15-50 mobil one.

The engineers decided to use that oil intended it to be on a stock unmodded evo.

Neither am I and I still use the oil stated in the manual. Is their any scientific data to backup your statement?

Sorry just my personal experience with my personal evo on the dyno and out on the track on hot days.

you can run the 10-30 no problem but on my car I would perfer the headroom in the oil to push the car hard.

It's still at 90 psi at cruising.

With so many people doing this, I doubt I will have any issues, but its still substantially higher than when running 10w-30.
