Check your transfer case for the whining. As for the clutch, is it still the stock clutch, may be time to replace it. I'd highly recommend taking the car to a tuning shop and have them check it out.

Depending on miles your transfer case and rear diff. are probably due for a fluid flush/change. There have been a few evos that had a fair amount of metal buildup on the magnetic drain plugs, and also a bit low on fluid. ALways a good idea to change the fluid regularly.

I had a lot of grinding, turned out to be my throw out bearing was completely shot, which cause the clutch to not properly disengage. That destroyed my Cusco Twin Plate...

I am sure my tranny took some abuse, but it shifts butter smooth since I installed the clutch with a friend. It certainly is a pain in the butt to do!

When in 1st gear and clutched, my car would move, or on a slight upward hill, it wouldn't drift backwards. That's how I knew there was definitely a problem with clutch/bearing.

As for the transmission, it's hard to really say. I thought my tranny was totally screwed. I opted to install the new clutch/bearing and break the clutch in and just see what happens. I luckily didn't mess the tranny up as it shifts very smooth. Having an 03 however it does have the 5th gear minor grind if you slam the gear, but there isn't a reason to do that. Sometimes four is also a little tempermental, but I rarely encouter that.

If it's really whining loud I'd lean to the transfer case, but again I'd take it to a tuning shop/transmission shop and have them evaluate the car.

Shep can do a transmission rebuild starting around $850, the transfer case starts around $350.

Know any of the history on the car was it beat on at all? The transfer case is really delicate if exposed to wheel hop. You get the tranny and or transfer case fixed and I doubt you'll have any more problems as long as you take care of the car.

Did they give you any type of warrenty with it? Did you purchase an extended? It's a long shot but always worth looking at.
