if you look at the compressor housing (air box side, next to the block) there is a flat face (about 1,5" x 2") with the turbo designation on it. you'll see the inscription punched, and it'll say something like:

TD05HR - 16G- 9.8T for the 9.8

or TD05HR - 16G- 10.5T for the 10.5

This is assuming that the turbo hasn't been fiddled with before.

On a side note, if you have a 10.5 and a 9.8 housing in your hands how can you tell the difference between the two?

I'm from South Africa, and we have only recently recieved the EVO's here. we get the same models as you guys. Be good to compare notes.

Is there a relatively straightforward way of telling whether you have a 9.8 or 10.5 hotside without pulling the turbo out?

if you are holding both in your hands then you'll see that the diameter of the 9.8 housing is slightly smaller than the diameter of the 10.5 housing. these two numbers refer to the cross sectional area of the turbine (snail part, also called nozzle area) so you can't see the difference in area directly (due to the twin scroll sort of being in the way of the visual)... but it shouldn't be too subtle.

its hard to tell.. In japan, the 9.8 housing WAS available as a single flapper design.. However I had not seen it installed in any cars (Basically used for OEM replacement parts and turbos)

The double flapper on the left does look like the smaller 9.8 and probably an 03 or 04 turbo.. If you have the turbos where you can look at them, the numbers on the cold side cover (cast aluminum portion) will tell you what it is. You can verify the scroll size of the hot side (the portion you've shown us) by lookin in the exhaust port, it has a 10.5 or 9.8 cast into it. The JDM Only GT-A had an even smaller Turbine housing which was a 9.0..

From just looking at the picture its hard to be 100% certain what it is, The right side unit is newer than the left, and its likely a 10.5 Hot side, but due to the angle, its hard to tell you if its an Evo9 turbo compressor, since the angle is bad, but it DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ONE, therefore it would likely be an 05 turbo..
