Anyone make a muffler for wastegate dumps?

After riding in several big turbo cars with wastegate dumps that vent to the atmosphere rather than being re-routed, I am curious, does anyone make a muffler or spark arrestor/muffler to deaden the sound of the otherwise obnxiously loud pipes?

That is the strangest question I have ever heard. If you dont want the noise route it back into the exhaust.

AMS makes a recirculating wastegate dump pipe, so it joins back up with the headers, that would prolly work.

No, its not strange, According to several different companies, recirculating the dump in some cases causes extra back pressure on the wastgate. Having never verified it, I dont know...but for those who dont offer than type of option, this would be a good cure for it. If I find the post where Geoff says this I'll link it.

Its also an extra expense for most header prices, I figure I could make these simply and cheaply to rememdy anyone who already has a VTA wastegate dump

why not cut a whole in the dp and make a pipe and weld it up to the dump and back into the exhaust? idk if that would work...just an idea

I forget the optimum length, but if you reintroduce the waste gate flow far enough down stream, it is not a problem per se. I forget, but seems like it is in excess of 18" from the turbo...

zeus, I would imagine it should be that big a deal, but this is an alternate solution for someone who is already stuck with a manifold like that.

The original Porsce 911 turbo(commonly known as a 930) had a small muffler on the wastegate from the factory. Maybe you could track down one of those or buy a replacement?

I would think that by using some sort of a muffler device you would introduce the same backpressure (Or more) than if you just sent it back into the exhaust system.

Good point. The idea was to see if anything exists. Its feasibility Im planning on testing on someones or my own car in a short time.

I don't think he is saying put it back into the exhaust. He is saying on that like 1/2 dump tube add a small muffler on that pipe to muffle the sound but not lose the advantage of dumping.

My friend did this on his Mercedes 190E 2.3-16V with GT35R turbo (might be a T4, can't remember). I am not sure where he got the muffler (I think he made it), but it quieted it down ALOT! I do not believe it has caused any boost creep issues.
