cleaning MAF....

I took my MAF off today and inspected it and the intake pipe and noticed my pipe and MAF sensor was dirty. I took them both off and cleaned the pipe out with some WD40 and washed it out with water, but I don't know what to use on the sensor.

I have almost 52K on my car and I've changed the filter numerous times, but not as often as I should have with the undertray off the car.

What can I use to celan the MAF sensor? I bought some STP throttle body and intake cleaner, but I'm not sure if I should use it or not. I've had some people tell me to use brake cleaner.

Any suggestions?

i've always used electronics cleaner or "contact cleaner". these are designed for sensors and such. you can buy electronic cleaner at radio shack or even the company that makes Brakleen in the red can makes a car electronic and sensor spray cleaner. you should be able to find that at pep boys, autozone, etc. good luck.

I found some MAF cleaner at PEP BOYS made by CRC. It worked really well. I sprayed it in there and all the dirt and residue looked to melt away and it was pretty much dry instantly. Its probably cheaper than the contact cleaner too being it was only 6 bucks.

I used carburator cleaner to clean mine in the past..worked fine. Just made sure it dried properly before reinstalling it...& didn't let the electrode/cirucit get too much cleaner on it.

Brake cleaner and most carb cleaners have some form of carbontetrachloride in them. That is the stuff that was banned by usage in the military years ago due to how health hazardous it is. They used it in large quantities though for cleaning aircraft. It worked really well. I would not recommend using that on your MAF it is a very powerful degreaser. Like everyone else said. Contact cleaner or the CRC product.

i was just wondering if any Evo guys cleaned their MAF's regularly...

When i drove my 1.8T, I would clean the MAF every other oil change with alcohol. I was thinking about doing the same with the Evo from now on...I've never seen the CRC stuff

The CRC product is good. I clean my MAF every couple of months or when I clean my filter. Typically the idle is smoother. I would imagine it also helps throughout the rev range.

No reason to, there's a very large difference between a finicky and fragile bosch hot film setup and the mitsu karman design.

I've got 50K on my car and this was the first time I cleaned mine. I may clean mine every other filter change or somehting since I amrunning the HKS Racing Suction intake and filter.

I found the CRC cleaner at Pep Boys. I'm sure you can find it at your local store with no problem.

I also noticed like my car ran a bit smoother after I cleaned it. Might have been a mental thing, but it seemed like it.
