MR trans sucks when cold

When my MR is cold, the transmission doesn't slide into the next gear smoothly. There's a definite clunk like the synchros aren't doing their job completely. After about 10-15 minutes, when everything comes up to temperature, the shifting action is smooth as butter. I'm just wondering if this is normal. I'm hoping it is. My SVT focus never did this even when it was well below freezing. I hate to think how the Evo will shift when winter arrives. It's rather disappointing considering it's suppose to have triple synchros on some gears and double on others.

Mine does the exact same thing. I'm not too worried at this point...

It is absolutely normal, give it a couple of minutes to warm up. Most cars are like this.

Its not just an MR problem, they all do it. I usually let the car warm up to operating temp before i drive it(well at least most of the time).

Thanks. I'm relieved that it's normal.

Letting the car warm up really dosent warm up the tranny juice, you need to drive it..It's normal, just take it easy until it warms up..

Yes, by warming up, we don't mean sitting at idle. Warm up both the engine and tranny by driving at low rpm and with slow shifting.

not just mitsu^, most transmission are like that because of the oil viscosity at cold temperatures

Try switching to this tranny fluid. It is the EXACT equivalent to the SuperDiaqueen and is fully synthetic: the part number for mopar dealers is 04874459. black bottle labled mopar synthetic manual transmission lubricant SAE 75W-85, on the back it states it's for the NV4500 tranny and that it's GL-4. it's weird, the fluid is actually clear, not gold like most. works great in my MR, in the cold it's much better than redline and better than stock IMO. the only fluid i was hesistant to try was synchromesh since it's not GL-4, but this is the best synthetic alternative i could find and works well and i'll continue to use it. good luck with the MR and let me know how you like it! when you first change it i guess from the remnants of the old fluid still in it, it is a little notchy, but only for the first few hundred miles, then it became very smooth, at least that's how it was for me.

Atlvalet, why did you go through all that trouble instead of just using SuperDiaQueen? You actually feel that it's better than the stock fluid?

Dealer-commissioned crap? What in the hell is your problem?

I asked a fellow MR owner for his opinion on something that matters to me and has nothing to do with you or your SSL GSR. We have had a lot of discussion on the proper fluids here and on EvoMR.net, so if he has a good solution that he TRULY believes in, then it's important information to me.

Please learn the difference in the words "there," "their," and "they're."
